What is your favorite Base Set Holo card?

I feel bad, I just ridiculed Nidoking here;

Although I’ve now chosen Nidoking here. It’s our redemption arc. It was a close call between Nidoking and Charizard for me.

I’m surprised at Alakazam coming in third. Not too surprised by Blastoise or Charizards placements so far

I had to think for a second between Alakazam and Gyarados, but went with Alakazam. Nidoking and Charizard are also top tier.

I was genuinely curious lol. I’m so used to people (especially younger generations) taking shots at base set art for being boring, unexpressive, and using stock images. So seeing @Vertemes so strongly defend Alakazam was genuinely intriguing. And he did a pretty good job elaborating his thoughts to boot, so kudos to him!

Its Charizards world and we are all witnesses

With that said, there is just something so visually striking about Blastoise

The color really pops
Well deserved #2

I voted Charizard, but besides that I really like Clefairy’s. The colorless mons really pop and it was cool back in the day seeing them do non fully evolved holos!

As much as I love Chansey I would not say the Base art is my favorite

I love blastoise but the real winner is hitmonchan

He looks ready for a fight, he’s in a boxing pose like he’s about to OKO you. To me it represents hitmonchan perfectly and even if there isn’t much of a background it feels like he’s primed for a fight or boxing match, I love base set but to me this one feels like it’s giving off the spirit of hitmonchan the best, it demonstrates his fighting spirit (also Jackie Chan is one of my favorite actors/marshal artists)

I went with Raichu.

As much as Charizard is the ultimate nostalgia bait, and the other two starters have such rich, striking colours, it’s the mouse that always draws me back.

The pop of yellows, browns & greens together with a vibrant holo shine make it such a visually interesting card, compared to most (but not all) of the Base holos.

Why do all lists of pokemon names sound like the PokeRap…?

It was so close call between venusaur, zapdos and nidoking that i had to take a good while to check the cards in hand but at least today the choice was venusaur, the combination of artwork, colours and layout was the most balanced with it, in shadowless it gets even better but unfortunately i only own unlimited ones

I went Blastoise. However, it depends with some of these. I think the 1st Ed/Shadowless colours really make a difference. For example, Charizard to me looks way better in 1st Ed compared to Unlimited. His green wings and orange tone really pops compared to the Unlimited variant that came after. With Blastoise I like both versions almost equally, that’s the main reason I picked him over Charizard (and well, Squirtle/Blastoise was my starter on Pokemon Blue too).

I know it’s rarely mentioned, but seeing Alakazam at #3 I think he looks best in the Japanese or Base Set 2 version, the cosmos holo looks really great IMO:

Gyarados ultimately. However Alakazam was my first favorite for Base and still stands in the top 2 spot for me. Venusaur would be 3rd.

Blastoise, Gyarados, Alakazam in that order

Such interesting differing takes in here. I think cards like poliwrath, ninetales, and clefary are highly underrated. My personal favorite is probably mewtwo. Followed by charizard and alakazam.

What’s interesting the most is chansey has no votes yet. And it’s one of the most expensive cards.

Also the only holo that looks better with a shadow than without!
