I think the intention of this topic is to discuss the parallel universe where Charizard was not released and how that would change things. “THE card” is from the perspective of a kid in 1999 in the context of this thread.
As for the discussion of what “THE card” is today, I’d say the Babe Ruth vs Honus Wagner comparison nails it. Most people with surface knowledge will know Babe Ruth/Charizard but for a percentage of those people that look into it more will learn that there are more expensive cards out there and Wagner/illustrator are known for sitting on the top of that list.
I agree with @gottaketchumall , Charizard is THE card. It caters to everyone, regardless of age, income or other variables. It’s the badass card we all wanted as a kid and still want today.
The Illustrator is the most expensive card, but who has nostalgia for it? And how many people actually have hopes and dreams of owning one? Can anyone tell off the top of their head what the text on the card says?
