What do you guys think of surging sparks as a investing opportunity?

This is inaccurate. There were plenty of examples the past couple of years where the booster box was in stock on Pokémon Center for MSRP for a long time and was selling on TCGPlayer for >$30 over MSRP.

I think you’ll get better returns in 3-5 years from the S&P even if it crashes during that time

This isn’t even a special set. It’s a main set!

People can argue all they want that Surging Sparks will be worth a bunch of money in the future. Literally the worst argument for this is “Pokemon may not restock a core set one week into its two year long print run.”

Oops I looked at his post thinking of Prismatic Evolutions - even more reason to flood those booster boxes then

While I’m sure it’s infuriating to hear for someone that is constantly sitting on the sidelines missing out on the action of every new set, It’s actually the best argument to be made. Perhaps the only one to make regarding the immediate future of the price.

The only thing that fuels prices on new modern is speculation and demand.

I think I’ve so far read to about halfway through this thread, and really cannot be arsed to read the rest cos I know exactly what the flavour of the conversation is gonna be. Vert I blame you! :stuck_out_tongue:

Yup no need to waste your time further. Basically a toned down Reddit thread

I think you’re talking to the wrong person! My collection is almost entirely graded singles. I buy some sealed here and there if I like the set. The whims of the modern market don’t mean much to me and I have very little riding on it financially, nor desire to engage more than superficially in the modern sealed market.

That’s interesting, because I already gave several examples of modern sets (Shining Fates, Champions Path, Darkness Ablaze, Vivid Voltage) where the speculation and demand was at an all-time high upon release and the sets were sold out and hard to find. This was followed by both a crushing wave of reprinting and a decrease in demand as newer and more exciting things came out.

Taking all the responsibility for this

Why don’t we shift gears and talk about the REAL investment opportunity? :money_mouth_face: :toilet:

This thread isnt about steam siege…

All I know is…no one knows ANYTHING.

It’s about spreading your risk.

No one predicted Evolving Skies price.

Most people in this forum (including myself) were predicting Moonbreon to dip to 350, but it kept chugging.

Buy some cases and throw them in the closet.

I would do that but I have a problem opening boxes so I just invest in things I can’t open, lol.

Hey buddy why don’t you go ahead and pack up your bags? There’s no room for constructive criticism and logic round these parts

Ah sorry, sometimes I go outside!

Maybe this is more efour:

“PIKACHUU TO DA MOON - 1k A BOX BABY”

or

“ITLL BE OVERPRINTED, PRICE WILL DUMP, MODERN SUCKS”

Whichever you relate more to!

Its a very rational argument to state this may not be “the set” to hold for long term investing. I also stated I would invest in this for short term (if you didnt see that). So again Im being pretty rational in stating there is an investment opportunity in this, even if I dont like the set. Not liking a set and still admitting you can invest in it is as rational as it gets Im not sure why you wrote that. 99% of people in this forum would never tell you to invest in something they dont like. I literally wrote Id invest in it but dont like the set.

No need to apologize I understood the frustration and I appreciate the clarity. I will admit the pikachu is growing on me after holding it in hand this weekend. Does not “suck” so ill take that back.

Just forget it man. I meant rational as in arguments for why the set is good/bad ; ) (Objective arguments). Just to be clear, it wasn´t meant as an insult. But like I said, better to have these conversations in real life.

Didnt take it as an insult at all. Just clarifying that Im putting logic and reason behind my statements and admit that its a set to invest in while its still jumping. And I agree. Not being able to hear a tone over text definitely hinders a debate.

I was tagged a few times because I made the Evolving Skies Market Watch thread a few years ago when the boxes were initially moving.

My thoughts on this product are similar to any other modern set. If you like it, go ahead and buy it. Understand that every modern set will have a substantial supply for many months and will be in standard rotation for a few years.

Like almost every set, it will appreciate beyond MSRP if given a sufficient amount of time. The rate of this increase will depend on many factors outside of your control (e.g., popularity, print size, chase cards, etc.).

I think it’s important to remember that there will always be something to be excited about in Pokemon. What is popular now will eventually become boring or surpassed by some innovation in card design, layout, texture, foiling, etc.

Ask yourself if you will care this deeply about Surging Sparks in 6-12 months when everyone is clamoring over the next big thing. Sometimes doing nothing at all is your best bet when everyone is frothing at the mouth near release.

As I’ve said previously, I find modern sealed stonking to be the most boring and least rewarding way to engage with this hobby. But if you want to make money, it’s pretty easy if you’re patient enough and have the capital.
