I think any of the fanfare’s (player’s ceremony). Most of them are illustrated by Himeno who’s got that OG/Legend-status sort of feel and they always have great fan-favorite pokemon celebrating together. The prices are very obtainable, but still pricey and scarce enough to feel like an accomplishment
There are certain cards like ancient mew and grey hat pikachu that seem to have such far-reaching popularity. I think they tickle the right part of the brain that makes people enjoy cards even if they aren’t primed to. That’s what I’d choose.
I think I would just show them cards I like, or a theme. Modern imo has a nice entry point because (at least in Japanese) you don’t have to spend a lot to get cards with beautiful art.
I would say cards that tend to have some other kind of general appeal. Scream promos, mario pikachu, van gogh pika come to mind. Other than that, cards you like and art you appreciate. Passion is infectious.
I would also say scream promos, but I think it has to match their personality to really do the job. If they’re a shiny things person, an art person, a TCG person, who knows?!
I would give cards to kids when I did shows, because that is how I got started, and I think it’s kinda neat to now do it myself. But the most consistent fetch ketch copyright pending is this. I’m not sure why, but it certainly stands out and I think being JP, gives it an element of intrigue. The english ones went over well too, tho…
I would choose some of my favourite cards from different eras with different art styles to show some scale how different the cards can be, the five cards i have in my small display would do very well for this.
I understand your reasoning (and agree that your example is excellent art with a low barrier to entry) but I’ve found that non Pokemon card collectors don’t necessarily gravitate to artwork that showcases more than one Pokemon.
Those of us in the weeds appreciate the Nidoran chasing the Nidoran and everything in between, but if I had to guess, the uninitiated just see a vibrant Pikachu card and everything else must be explained.
I have friends who are big comic book collectors ranging 40-70 yrs old who couldn’t care less about Pokemon but have gone out of their way to compliment my Masago Umbreon & Mewtwo as noted by @c0ll3ct0r
I also have nieces and nephews ranging from 4-7 yrs old whom (I’d assume would gravitate to modern artwork) but adore base set art as noted by @garzog
That’s just my experience and YMMV but if I had to choose one I would pick this.
