What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon? [Archived]

Ah! Yup. :100: feel ya there.
And theme should definitely be included, but that’s fixed now.

MY Unpopular IMHO Opinion is that a set without a strong theme is not worth collecting (as a set). Does it feel good? Maybe. Does it look good? No. Would I rather buy something else? Definitely.

It’s funny because the general market does not agree. Give a crap set a big chase card and suddenly the whole set is goated. But give a solid set an even distribution of good but not great cards it’s overlooked.

The addition of a single chase card kinda ruins a set as much as it helps a set

Yeah, I bought a lot of HL back in the day but pretty much only because, for a long while, it was the only pack available in the shop I bought packs from. On reflection, it is one of the weaker sets for sure. I also hate the reverse pattern and the way that they curl up to such an extreme (never had that issue with earlier ex era reverses).

I kept the Groudon and Kyogre exs as they look mean and moody as hell (especially Groudon). However, don’t sleep on Ninetales ex as that also looks amazing with the big, glowing eyes in the background. I had to track a NM one of those down a few years ago.

I genuinely think Pokemon hasn’t done anything wrong in any game or tcg. i love all the gimmicks.

I think Unseen Forces gold stars are great gold stars and the only reason theyre not viewed in a better light is because of the factory theft.

Yeah they look good but they’re forever tainted unfortunately. There’s no way they can be viewed the same as the other gold stars anymore

I dont know if its an unpopular opinion, but when i got into the card collecting hobby some years ago I was surprised that it didnt reflect the rarity of certain pokemons in the gameboy and nintendo games. I mean, whoever played in their game boys or early nintendo ds knows how rare it was to have a mew, a celebi or a jirachi. I mean the only person i knew to have those 3 together was my older cousin and damn, how jealous was i hahahaha. Arceus is also another that surprised me, the literal god of pokemon and yet in the tcg i feel he is just another pokemon like the rest. And dont get me started with the shinies…

In the games, most used pokemon were also not always the rarest. It would be cool though, if they more frequently reserved the rarest mon for promos or the rarer slots. I think it’s neat that this is true for some tho. Porygon has a decent number of early promos, for examples. Gimmieghoul (Is that what it’s called?) Meltan, some do follow this pattern.

Binder collecting brings more joy than slab collecting

Thats not unpopular? An unpopular opinion would be something like, ex is when ptcg got worse (Smth i believe for english, japanese got better, wizzards was peak english).

Given how popular graded cards are nowadays, you don’t really see people talking about binders that much!

Outside of mystery bags, it’s pretty hard to move most slabs these days. People are somewhat over the “grade everything” mindset.

And that’s probably for the best. Leave grading for the high condition vintage chase things as it’s supposed to be

Slabs are totally overrated, especially with modern cards. The differences in prices between 10s and 9s is absolutely ridiculous, especially considering the differences in condition between 9s and 10s are microscopic.
