Upcoming "Black Bolt" & "White Flare" main expansions (June 6, 2025)

Scarlet & Violet Expansion Pack White Flare

(ポケモンカードゲーム スカーレット&バイオレット 拡張パック ホワイトフレア)

Scarlet & Violet Expansion Pack Black Bolt

(ポケモンカードゲーム スカーレット&バイオレット 拡張パック ブラックボルト)

This set would launch on June 6, 2025, with each booster box containing 20 packs.

  • The set size is unknown for now.
  • 1 Booster box includes 20 packs.
  • Booster box price currently unknown

Speculation:

This is matching the two trademarks recently filed.

Also speculation is going around that this set would include all 156 Unova Pokemon released in the Black & White videogames. Also a mirrorfoil card would be included in each pack and 4 Art Rare cards in 1 Box. This is all yet to be confirmed soon. The set is already being compared to Scarlet & Violet - 151, due to it’s similarties.

Also deck sleeves / deck box of Zekrom and Reshiram would be available.

Lastly a Black Bolt & White Flare Card File Set that includes a promo card of Victini with 3 booster packs each of Black Bolt & White Flare which would cost 2640 yen.

  • I will assume this Victini promo is not the [2023] Raging Surf-themed SAR Victini ex as it should be a 2025 card with “I” regulation mark
052/SV-P Victini ex

  • First dual main expansion releasing in June

I have approximately zero modern in my collection, but I do like Reshiram. Is that N’s Reshiram artwork going to be part of this set? Looks incredible :open_mouth:

Additional things I want to note:

  • Much of Scarlet & Violet’s Indigo Disk DLC has alluded to the Unova region (Blueberry Academy is in Unova)
    • Terastal phenomenon and the Future/Past [Paradox] theme have been leading up to this tie-in with Black & White era → Black Bolt & White Flare sets
    • Indigo Disk DLC but there’s no announcement of BW1/BW2 remake or BW3
    • Trademarks for BW sets this early when merchandise is usually released after the game can mean that there is no BW remake or sequel game

Regarding PLZA:

  • Neither PLZA nor Switch 2 have been announced yet, and the next opportunity to do so is Pokémon Day Februrary 27, 2025 which can mean:
    • PLZA might be a November 2025 main game
    • PLZA is not part of the Scarlet & Violet era
    • PLZA sets and merchandise always release after the main game (2026)
    • PLZA tcg might be its own era (2026 ZA era?), like HGSS was in 2010
    • PLZA base set might be 2026, earliest at December 2025

Black/White and Black/White 2 were the original past vs future thematic in Pokemon I’m not surprised they are getting this type of set. Countless parts of the games u can point out multiple different references to past like or future like ideals and designs even in the Pokemon itself.

SV also built of tera gimmicks through the Gem items introduced in Black/White (they function the same).

I really like the idea of them not going straight into a Johto set after the success of 151, but doing other generations first to mix it up.

What is curious is them splitting it up into two different sets for the Japan release. For once our western expansion might actually be better.

I think its likely split cause White Tree Hollow/Black City existing on top of Opelucid City having a traditional and modern version.

PLZA is stated as a 2025 release, unless production estimates have shifted behind the scenes. I believe the speculation is for a Spring 2025 release, which would allow for 2 main sets to be crafted solely around PLZA (ORAS got 2, PLA got 2-ish). If this Unova set is a special set for the English side, that means it won’t be interrupting the main SV expansions, and we’ll get PLZA and 12 main sets as usual.

BW remakes aren’t going to happen until Gen 10, if at all. This set has no correlation to that. I’d say after 15 years, they’re allowed to make a set celebrating a generation without it being tied to a new game. There’s a possibility I’m wrong, but it’s extremely unlikely given the pattern Gamefreak has adopted for the past decade and a half.

Something I noticed with the JP set names on Pokéguardian,

拡張パック means expansion pack (main expansion)
強化拡張パック means enhanced expansion pack (subset expansion)

Here suggests that Black Bolt & White Flare are actually main expansions releasing in June instead, which means there is a change in the JP schedule

  • BW sets are SV11
  • Undisclosed SV11a releasing sooner?

What does this mean for other JP sets and EN sets in 2025?

JP set names according to Pokéguardian:

Scarlet & Violet Expansion Pack Battle Partners
ポケモンカードゲーム スカーレット&バイオレット 拡張パック バトルパートナーズ
January 24

Scarlet & Violet Enhanced Expansion Pack Heat Wave Arena
ポケモンカードゲーム スカーレット&バイオレット 強化拡張パック 熱風のアリーナ
March 14

Scarlet & Violet Expansion Pack The Glory of Team Rocket
ポケモンカードゲーム スカーレット&バイオレット 拡張パック ロケット団の栄光
April 18

  • Heat Wave Arena should be SV9a
  • The Glory of Team Rocket should be SV10
  • BW sets should be SV11
  • There is no SV10a enhanced expansion (subset expansion)

  • EN special sets are based on either JP subset expansions or leftovers of past JP releases
    • The only subset expansions currently available for this is Heat Wave Arena and maybe SV11a
  • EN SV10 should be a standalone Team Rocket set
  • EN SV11 should be a standalone BW set

With the above amendment, if Pokeguardian’s info on JP names is correct the BW sets are not special sets but the third 2025 main set after Glory of Team Rocket, releasing in June. We might actually be seeing a change in traditional scheduling where there is no subset expansion between SV10 and SV11

The last time the third main expansion released in June was S3 Infinity Zone (June 5, 2020), which led to sets after it moving up like S3a Legendary Heartbeat (July 10, 2020) and S4 Shocking Volt Tackle did (September 18, 2020)

A potential reason for this is that PLZA is releasing in November, and the first set of 2026 PLZA era might be in December 2025. This happened with the first Sword & Shield JP sets in 2019, with SM12a GX Tag All Stars pushed forward (October 4, 2019) to usher in the next era

A counterpoint to this could be that SV11a and SV12 are instead the PLZA sets, but I highly doubt that after this much development time (more than PLA) TPC is going to release only 2 sets for the game only to be brushed aside in a couple months for the gen 10 main game in November 2025. PLZA 2026 era is more logical in this timeframe (like HGSS)
