Can’t confirm but that was mentioned here. If true, it does reveal their expectations for this auction.
I think it would have done better on Heritage or PWCC.
If the 100k guarantee is true then it sounds like a win for all parties.
Tord probably walks away with more than he could have net through another auction house; the buyer gets a great card at a solid price, and the auction house gets some much needed advertising for essentially a few thousand pounds (ok maybe more like 10-15k, but still).
It would have been £70k plus 20% BP plus VAT on the BP (25% fees total). So £87,500 total so around $106,000.
Didn’t check this thread after the beginning. I thought people were saying that he wouldn’t sell the card because of what it means to him lol.
I guess money means more than a 2nd place anyway since the prize money isn’t great when you factor in all the traveling costs involved. Not that it’s great to begin with either.
If you watch the interview he did with PSA, at the time he slabbed the card, you’ll see he talks about how competing is his full time job.
It’s not that money "means’ more than 2nd place, it’s that that card represents a paycheck that will reimburse all his flights, hotels, food and living costs he had to pay into throughout the entire year to get to that 2nd place.
Most players aren’t collectors, so the card isn’t as sentimental as the payout. Basically it’s a win win for someone like this to sell; they can continue chasing the dream of competing and the buyer is most likely a collector who values the card.
That’s what I said isn’t it?
The hobby is a money sink for competitive players. Not sure if that will ever change unless you could win money playing online but not only does Live (if that’s what it is called) suck according to players, that also wouldn’t help TPCi generate physical sales that supports the ecosystem in the first place.
I wonder if TPCi would decide to change the trophy illustration every year moving forward. Would that hurt or help prices?
They become even more limited than they already are since they are tied to single years but on the other hand, would there be a market chasing them if they kept changing? With such limited supply - would it be 6 for each rank? - would the pool of buyers be smaller because completing the set would be impossible/prohibitively expensive?
Maybe they might change it every era instead.
I don’t think TPCi designs the trophy cards with the aftermarket in mind. Seems they change it when they want to. There are people who try and buy 1 of each placement every year, there are people who have to pick only 1 copy to buy because they will likely never afford another, and there’s people at varying points between these two examples. If the artwork changed frequently, I imagine the uber-completionists would keep completing and the people who can’t afford one of every placement/year would have greater reason to exercise scrutiny and be more deliberate with they copy(ies) they choose to buy. Do they buy one that’s not their favorite but they can afford, just to have one because their favorite may never come up in their price range? Or do they hold out? It’ll complicate the decision process for these types of buyers. It’ll also lead to “speculation” on which years/artworks would “perform” better.
Perhaps every generation or some type of milestone within the tcg. Its always been pretty impulsive. The original full arts happened in 2014 but full arts were already out for a few years. Alt arts would have made the most sense for this years trophy cards, but them being full arts again is more to the point that pokemon just does this impulsively.
I remember the days a bid of $1000 was done for the nr1 trainer.
We have traveled for 10 years in a row to worlds and played all big tournaments over the world and I can assure you it did cost a small fortune.
My youngest son competed in 10 Worlds, The oldest in 5, my foster daughter also in 5 and me only 2 times. It was worth the money simply for the experience. But I can totally understand players selling their prices to fund their next “battle”.
But still I would love to play a Worlds one more time.
While I’m one of the very few players who also has a large collection, most player simply don’t collect. (at least they didn’t in the past)
Being a full-time Pokemon player is very hard. Lots of RNG so tournament placings aren’t as consistent as other esports, therefore can’t rely on tournament earnings as much. Also Pokemon players weren’t even allowed to wear their jerseys on stream so teams were not incentivized to sponsor players. It’s also just a mid spectator sport.
As of recently, players can now wear their team jerseys and the prize pools of tournaments have gone way up (pretty much doubled). Glad Tord came away with a good pay day to keep playing full-time, he deserves it.
I like that the slab has Tord’s name on it. Not because he’s the GOAT but because I think the value of World’s trophy cards are not equal if we have access to the following information:
-
Was the card awarded to a TCG finalist? Or was it awarded to a VGC finalist? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Pokken/Pokemon Go finalists also get trophy cards? IMO, those cards should have the least value.
-
What division was the game played in? Masters > Senior > Junior should be the order that trophy cards should be valued at. IDK, something about having a Junior’s No.1 feels way worse than having a Master’s No.1.
Maybe collectors like living in the dark when it comes to all of this. I know it’s kind of weird in general to think about another person touching your card and being able to put a face to their hand makes it even weirder. But I think PSA or even TPCI should designate what game the trophy cards came from and what division as well.
@needszeebs and I met Tord at Toronto regionals last weekend. I congratulated him on the sale. He kind of just gave me a look and like awkward about it. Maybe he’s not happy with the price it got idk ![]()
(he was very nice and signed a card for me)
To be fair, the whole exchange was pretty awkward lol I was mad nervous, he was very quiet and Scott was standing in the back and threw in the “congratulations” kinda randomly ![]()
Why does any of that matter?
Collectors don’t care if the card was earned by someone more experienced or related to the TCG. I’m not sure why they would either. The passion for the game is near absent for collectors.
The fact that Pokemon still has so much RNG going on is another nick against it.
None of what you said is true.
If TPCI added some sort of designation on the cards indicating the game and division I 100% guarantee you that Masters TCG would hold the highest premium.
If that ever does happen, having Tord’s name on the PSA case may future proof it more than other Pika trophies.
Interesting, looks like it might be up for sale again!

Maybe it went unpaid?
That is the most untrue thing I have ever heard in my history of collecting pokemon. Look at the cases of people collecting specific cards by a certain artist. Look at this ENTIRE forum. people have been collecting the cards and playing the game for YEARS, mostly doing both! There are kids (like me) who couldn’t afford the game due to issues, so I found my way by opening pokemon packs. A lot of collectors not only buy the cards, but collect the games and other items.
The people that your talking about aren’t collectors, they’re people looking to make a quick buck. I’m absolutely disgusted by this post.
