Time to say goodbye

Hi all,

I @majomaal ( Marcel ) joined this forum on December 7 2015. At that time I was one of the oldest members (57). Besides @KingPokemon ( Gary ) .

Pokemon was on my radar around 1999. My son was 5 at that time and I started buying Dutch First Edition Base,Jungle,Fossil for him. Probably the intent was collecting because most of the unique cards were instantly sleeved for protection by me. I had bought a poster for him with all Base Pokemon on it. At bedtime we trained together to learn all Pokemon by memory. He succeeded , I did not .

But he was more into Yugioh at that time and played some tournaments(no Pokemon).

Time went by and the complete mint sleeved Dutch First Edition Base,Jungle,Fossil were lying somewhere sleeping.

Then more than 15 years later I was triggered by the development of Pokemon Go by Nintendo for your mobile. As the old men I was walking around outside with a mix of people by age.

It was fun. Now I play Pokemon TCG Pocket safe from home

I also joined this forum back then. As from the beginning I was interested/focused on Japanese Pokemon cards and its history. It was also a sport for me to buy cards not with a big wallet but as cheap as possible. This you can not imagine anymore nowadays.

By going into the history of Pokemon I also found one the Dutch contender of the tournament in Hawaii in 2000. Getting in contact with him and buying his Tropical Mega Battle Lucky Stadium card and Photo album was the highlight in collecting Pokemon cards.

As time went by I collected all kinds of Japanese cards,boosters and decks. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with a scalper so selling for me was not fun, only collecting.

Then some years ago the extreme shift started in the popularity of Pokemon cards and prices.

As being a collector with the principle of doing it by a slim/small wallet I stopped collecting.

So the collection was there and dust was taking over.

In this I have brought my total collection to Heritage Auction Europe who has shipped it to Heritage Auction America.

Oh one piece was not shipped. Van Gogh Giclée, Pikachu™ Grey Hat painting (65x50) bought from the Van Gogh Museum. I will hang it on the wall forever as a beautiful memory of an aging man who stayed young while collecting and playing Pokemon.

Wow, what a journey - it’s tough saying goodbye to such a collection but holy cow did you have a good eye (and taste!). I know it’s bittersweet, but still, congratulations. That illustrator is astonishing, it’s always nice to see one come out of a collection where it was well-loved. Same with the No. 2 trainer…just…wow - very nice. Good on you for keeping the painting, it’s one hell of a momento!

The journey seems memorable at least. While I hope that you get enough from all of this that it will help you live without worry for the next few decades, dont forget to show up and share some wild stories from the time you spent hunting. Those can be priceless stories to the rest of us who comparatively just got here.

I may be in the minority here but you opened with your age and started talking about your son. My mind went to dark place trying to think of where this post was going. After reading I’m relieved.

I too have sold cardboard that matters a lot to me. It can be rough.

I wouldn’t trade the friends or memories I made along the way for anything though. IMO that’s the only thing that can’t be replaced and will always be yours.

Thank you for writing this and sharing your journey. Reading this is bittersweet as a collector. It has been a wonderful journey and it is coming to an end. I am not in a position you are yet but someday, hopefully, will also be in a position to look back so fondly at all of the memories made during my journey with this wonderful hobby. Also, be at peace when I have to part with it.

I have admired your posts on E4, specially with related to Japanese promos and that excel sheet of yours is a testament of your prowess as a collector.

I wish you the very best outcome with selling your collection. I know it is wishful to think that may it find homes as good as yours, but I hope it does. Thank you!

Damn you had a nice collection. I remember you purchased a few of those psa 10 WEB unlimited holos from my ebay store back in like 2017-2018, it was fun seeing them in that display frame you had made for the set!
