Nice rundown you gave there though. This is how I’ve been breaking it down:
Common
Uncommon
Rare
Holo Rare
Ultra Rare (These are your EX’s and Full Arts within the set numbering system)
Secret Rare (Outside of the set numbering system, with a subset of the Secret Rare’s being Rainbow Rare GXs)
As for this topic I’ve thought about this a bit and thought I’d chime in.
I think the marketplace for Sun & Moon is currently being driven down by the TCG playerbase. The set is massive and tough to complete. The TCG playerbase is opening a ton of product which is driving down the market value as they get rid of the cards that aren’t “playable”. Granted this happens with every set to a degree I think it’s greater this time around due to the Pokemon boom and vast increase in TCG players. It seems sets have sunk below the $600 mark which surprised me at first.
That being said, if the market is pushing the value of the cards down then the time to buy them is when they are at the bottom right? Is that right now? Probably not, but now is the time when the most product (and competition) should be on the secondary martketplace. As that tapers off as new sets come out the prices should reach a point of stabilization for a while until the set is out of print. Only then will prices of the rarest (and most desirable) cards start to see an upward movement. With all that in mind I think it’d be best to “invest” elsewhere if you are looking for a reasonable return anytime in the next few years.
Yeah, I was trying to acknowledge both the colloquial terminology and the official terminology in a way that shows where they stand in terms of relative use and relative rarity.
