There is a 9 listed on Mercari for $24k, and a 10 on snkrdunk for $42k, this AUTH copy is rough so I think they didn’t want it to get a 2-3 or something. This was my best and cheapest chance to get a copy, but it quickly past what I was willing to throw down (which was already orders of magnitude more than I have ever bid on anything before…).
Hard luck. I will be rooting for you to get his card eventually and @eeveeteam to get the scramble. Maybe not now but eventually you both will get there.
Only 100 copies handed out as a tie in to the XYZ anime coming out through a lottery.
Per Bulbapedia:
Another print featuring the Pocket Monsters XY&Z logo was distributed through a TV Tokyo lottery in early 2016. To enter the lottery, Japanese residents were required to call TV Tokyo between December 24 and December 30, 2015. Winners were notified by January 18, 2016, 100 of which were given this card.
I just checked, it seems there was a 10 emerald Rayquaza too. Didn’t even get 500$
So weird to see. Pop reports are dangerous (not that emerald is even high pop). So much stuff is inflated imo. It’s like a few things are stuck in 2021 for no reason.
I’m seriously about to give up on PWCC, I think allowing crypto is the reason so many things just end up higher than they “should”, it’s an easy way to launder (or just avoid paying taxes) some money and it ends up jacking up prices for everyone else.
The price doesn’t blow my mind too much. There are quite a few rich individuals going for the rayquaza master set in PSA 10. I know of 2 at least, and I’m not even really around on IG or anything like that where most of these guys live. I get that the ‘low pop’ argument doesn’t mean the card should instantly be massively expensive, but consider that this is the first public sale in 2 years (according to tcgfish), and that D&P era doesn’t exactly grade amazingly well and the pop is unlikely to explode any time soon, I’m not shocked that two or more well off collectors got into a bidding war over this card to be honest
I can’t remember the term someone used on here, but the problem is that the demand is equally low, so if 2 people get in a bidding war, the next time a card like that is up, there is no 3rd person to engage in a 2nd bid war.
In its favour, Rayquaza is a popular Pokemon but personally the art isn’t great. Of course art is subjective and I have an anti-CGI bias, but I think CGI cards are overly reliant on nostalgia to see appreciation in price whereas other cards have the potential to expand their audience past those who grew up with them.
Yes absolutely, very good chance the next copy to come along earns like $500 or something. But if you’re going for these cards (and are rich) are you going to wait potentially a few years for the next one to come around? Buying at that price isnt a smart financial move for sure but if your goal is the rayquaza master set then buying it as soon as its available is a smart move imo
The question isn’t whether the price is surprising, it’s about whether the price is sustainable.
Is there more latent ungraded PSA 10 supply ready to be found, or more buyers willing to pay >$1700? For a mass-produced card, I know how I would be betting
