If I knew that those 36 loose packs were unweighed and I intended to open them? Then they would be of equal value to me as the box.
Here’s why this question is relevant to the Evolutions box conversation: people claim that Evolutions box prices are driven by people wanting to open packs to relive nostalgia. But what’s missing from the conversation is the fact that people wanting to open Evolutions packs wouldn’t pay a 50% premium over loose unweighed packs for a box. The fact that a 50% premium exists indicates that people are buying the boxes to keep sealed.
Looks like people are starting to get their value submission back that were submitted after prices started soaring. I’m seeing lots of listings on ebay where the seller is selling like 25 PSA 10 versions of the card. Also noticing prices are dropping for these cards as well. RIP modern.
I’ve only gotten part of my May back so far lol. Some cards have a long way to drop IMO. Will be interesting to see what happens though with what will likely be a several month at minimum halt on sub $50 services so what is in is all there is… for now.
I didn’t see it posted anywhere else; Terapeak research is available to everyone now, so you no longer need a store subscription. It can be a pretty handy research tool to see general trends/sales data
A box has so much more going for it than 36 loose packs, the fact that a box may or may not be rare in its sealed form is irrelevant to these points as well!
Box provides;
Guaranteed unweighed packs if you chose to open it
Mint untouched packs if you decide to grade the boosters
Box can be held as a safe investment and sold in one transaction
Appeals to a larger amount of buyers - Sealed box/pack collectors, investors, box breakers.
Loose pack provides;
Uncertainty surrounding packs history - weighed, tampered with?
@zorloth, I was being facetious. My point is no one would prefer loose packs vs sealed product in an unknown setting. The level of consumer confidence isn’t close. But I agree with you, I also would buy loose packs from one of the reputable sellers we have if I could get a better price than a box. Selling side by side on the open market, the sealed item should and I believe will consistently sell for more though.
Of course the sealed box should sell for more. The point is that the fact it’s selling for 50% more indicates that people aren’t buying it to open. If it was selling for 10% or even 20% more then that would be a separate matter.
@zorloth, I’m not talking about the Evolutions example specifically. I’m just making a generalization about Pokémon packs in response to the statement that a significant premium should only exist on a sealed product if it’s exceedingly rare.
Sorry meant to include the 2nd evolutions too, Ivysaur etc. When new PSA labels turn up on the market too the price could be higher. Also yes meant all together. Might not all get 10’s of course, but that is a lot of cards when including the 2nd evolutions. Not to mention all the other cards inc the holo.
Hey all! I just found out that the new rotation for the TCG starting in September is dropping all of the Tag-Team cards. I was just thinking about putting a binder together of them since I really like the concept/artworks. I was wondering what you guys think will happen to prices for the more playable cards like Arceus Dialga and Palkia & Mimikyu and Gengar once they’re rotated out. The standard art version of these cards aren’t that expensive but they’re alternate arts both go for around $80. I would think that because there will be less people that want these cards for their decks that the prices would drop somewhat. Regardless, I’ll probably buy a lot of these cards before the new format starts anyway because I’m impatient but I was curious to hear what other people think.
Modern? The things are printed into oblivion. Save up and buy older stuff, doesn’t even have to be WOTC, just older than the recent boom is my suggestion.
@admiral I was thinking newer stuff would probably be pretty miserable, since there’s so much of it. I was hoping to get my hands on one of the exclusive boxes from Japan in the future, but I realized now that I’ve probably missed out on that for good.
Do you think the prices will still rise quite a bit then for the 4+ years in the past ones?
@sgbased Oh okay, that makes sense to skip out on packs realistically. They’re most likely never going to get to the level of prices like we’ve seen with the older ones again on top of it. I was pretty sad to see the recent box from Japan was something I would’ve absolutely loved to have, the Kanazawa one. I missed out on such awesome things. Now it’s just at a weird middle price range that I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable paying for.
