The legitimacy of sealed booster boxes going forward

Has anyone seen good ex era reseals yet??

It’s tough to see them since the boxes don’t come up for sale very often lol. But I also think they are much less likely to be resealed. There were multiple kinds of shrinkwraps used during the EX Series (i.e., the first 4 sets have shrinkwrap with the e-Reader logo on it). I guess people could be printing e-Reader logo shrinkwrap, but I don’t see why they wouldn’t just go for WotC – same shrinkwrap for most boxes, the boxes are much more liquid, and they’re being targeted by a lot of the new ‘investors’. Seems like a much more likely target for reseals.

jcincy sure… rev on the other hand…

I mean this is a new phenomenon is it not? There’s probably a few people out there who have figured out how to imitate WOTC wrapping, but surely we would have heard about resealed boxes over the years if this had been happening for a long time.

I bought my boxes five years ago or so, back when they were much more affordable, and I’m not really worried about their authenticity as they all seem wrapped uniformly (I have seven boxes) and don’t show signs of being counterfeit like the recent ones did.

I wouldn’t buy them going forward… but the ones I have I won’t lose sleep over.

Also, seems like this is big ticket enough to attract significant law enforcement attention… I look forward to the counterfeiters being traced.

Just a thought provocation…

If I said I had a 1st edition box for sale for $400k right now… how many of us would consider buying it as is and hope that it is legit (I would assume so). And think that they could hold it for another 5 years after which you sell it for $1m or take a chance to open it to find a $1m Charizard or a heck of a dream crush if you pull non-1st edition cards… (profit numbers are open to speculation).

That is the gut and wallet wrenching dilemma…

So apparently there are fake Japanese boxes, too. PokeRev is opening a fake Neo Genisis right now.

Just got a quick question about this. I recently bought a EX Emerald box from a eBay seller by the name of “fighto”. His stuff is always looking really minty and legit but ever since I have seen fake boxes have been floating around, I’m starting to question the legitimacy in my box. It’s too perfect…but the one flaw on it is that there is a piece of dirt inside the wrap which I’m not able to remove unless the plastic is opened. I’m not sure what to make of it. Has anybody bought from “fighto” and question the legitimacy of his stuff? Can dirt or stuff exist inside the shrink wrap? I don’t know what to think of it.

i feel like as a community, people should destroy any opened pack wrappers and boxes. i get they have value, but we’re going to see more of this so long as they’re floating around.

@muk did he go into where he bought it or how long ago? Mostly interested in how long ago

He said he got it about 2 months ago

I just asked the same question around dust on the box I bought - consensus seems to be very likely from the factory and not to worry. I’ve seen that seller sell heaps of boxes so I assume his are legit? You could ask him for how he got it on eBay?

Can’t tell if that’s a joke or not corey

No just my thoughts. Personally if I owned any wotc boxes id open all of them just to check their legitimacy. Obviously that would decrease the value but it would help me sleep better.

These resealed wotc boxes are scary as hell. I’m not trying to be negative but this is a huge problem. Think about anyone who bought a resealed box years ago. After so many months it will be very difficult to get a refund. If one is even possible once you’re past the refund window. Sure it’s easy to say it’s not hard to tell the difference from the legitimate one but these boxes look quite convincing.

Good luck everyone and please be careful going forward!

I’ve talked to him, he was a judge/staff member, he’s got all sorts of pins and packs and boxes from prereleases

Have you ever owned any wotc box?

a lot of people may have purchased them to later sell for more when the value hits a point they’re good with. it doesn’t change the situation for those people. it may sound fatalistic, but at this point the box you own is what it is. if you go to sell it to someone, it’ll likely either be a reseller of packs, or someone that wants to break it anyways at this point. you’ll find out then if its real or fake. no need to break the product now just to be sure, if you do that then they’ll be questions about the legitimacy of the packs.

just sit on it and sell when you’re ready and be ready to accept the results. if it bothers you that much, then open it now and be ready to grade whats inside or sell raw as pack fresh.

to me this can also spike prices of packs once the current supply dries up more on ebay and else where. theres still an appetite for packs and a larger buying audience than booster boxes based on price. if theres a fear that fakes are out there, then legitimate product will be all the more valuable as the perception of availability is also lessened now. i’m not sure anyone is really going to spend 30k+ at this point on a box without the intention of opening it. i still feel every box is on a path to be opened and its just a matter of time before they’re gone.

@uncledad Good points! I didn’t mean to spark so many responses. I just posted my thoughts. I felt slightly attacked by Shadowless. I stated in the second sentence. IF I had… So no I don’t own any sealed product. I’ve spent enough money on this hobby this year alone that I could have chose to buy quite a few boxes. To me personally I simply prefer the cards over the box. That’s just my choice.

Again good luck everyone! Please no more quotes. I’m exiting this conversation. I’d simply delete what I said but I’ve already been quoted multiple times.

Didn´t mean to attack you @mcorey777, was just curious about the exact situation. People that buy and handle these boxes usually have multiple or had experience with many before hand. The likelihood of someone like that getting scammed when they do their due dilligence is extremely small in my opinion. Now, if someone who hasn´t ever handled any kind of box just comes in and buys one for 5 digits, well, you need to really do your homework beforehand.

Ya that’s basically all I was getting at. Think of some random new guy that buys a 30k box. Or 10k box etc. Months pass and he’s out X amount of money. I could even see it happening to experts. (Not calling PokeRev or Collectables Guro a expert but clearly between the two they were just scammed out of big money.) Hopefully they get refunded.

I recieved a fake level X Luxray not long ago. Even have it shown in one of my youtube videos. @cooltrainertony actually pointed it out. My first instinct was it was a miscut card. Turns out after further inspection it was a obvious fake. It was also my first time receiving a fake card. What I’m getting at is it can happen to anyone.
