The Hobby Translation Guide

What I would like to do is accumulate a series of terms or phrases that are specific to this hobby and translate them such that a normal person can understand what they mean.

Examples from @wisewailmer
acquisition
popped up
clean
pull the trigger
comps

I want it to cover the whole spectrum of cringe please!! Please contribute what you can

Acquisition (noun): An item that has been obtained; usually recently, and usually legally.
Here is my latest acquisition :fire:

Auto/Sig (noun): Autograph/Signature.
“He has a crazy auto collection.”

Blasty (noun): Abbreviation of ‘Blastoise’, one of the most popular characters from the Pokémon franchise.
“I’ve always been a fan of Blasty over Charizord”

Cert (noun): short for ‘certification number’ - a unique number allocated to each item submitted for authentication to a third party. Can be used to confirm the exact card.
“Hey man would you take 10% off? Card looks good but it’s a 2xxx cert”

Clean
1. adjective: In notably good condition
“Picked up this super clean PSA 9 for less than the price of a raw copy. The market makes no sense.”
2. verb: to remove dirt, debris, or, with the use of chemicals, other imperfections that typically hurt the aesthetic appeal of a card
“Cracked this CGC 8.5 and after a little clean it got the bump to a BGS 9.5 :ok_hand:*”*

Comps (noun): Comparable sales of the same item, usually used by people afraid of paying more than the last sold price.
“Hey bud, it looks like recent comps are between 500-2000. Would you do 600?”

Cop (verb): to buy.
“I managed to cop this Darkness Ablaze ETB at the Target restock”

Crack and Re-sub (phrasal verb): to remove an encapsulated (slabbed) item from its tamper-proof case and again submit to the same company for grading with the aim of getting a higher grade. Sending it to a different company would be to cross grade it.
“Bro PSA totally screwed me on that Celebrations Zard, I’m gonna have to crack and re-sub.”

Establish/building a position: buying multiple of the same item (with the aim of generating a positive financial return on investment).
“I’m slowly building a position in out-of-print Sword and Shield ETBs. At these prices it’s a no-brainer.”

Gary

  1. noun: Short for Gyarados, the evolved form of Magikarp.
  2. noun: A charitable man who almost singlehandedly built the Pokémon card collecting hobby. Responsible for shaping it into what we know it as today.

1. “Sweet pickups. Love the gary in particular”
2. “Hi Gary, is it true that I don’t have to pay taxes on the trading cards that I sell?” [Editor’s note: it is not true]

Low pop (adjective): Short for ‘low population’. A relative term used in reference to the number of copies of a card in a specific grade.
Sometimes used incorrectly to refer to a card’s total distribution.
“That’s a pretty low pop PSA 10. I think there are only 69 copies.”

Minty (adjective): In better condition than other cards in the same general condition rating. Not to be confused with ‘mint’.
“Ooh that’s a minty PSA 5”

Milquepost (noun): A portmanteau of ‘milquetoast’ and ‘post’, meaning a bland, uncontroversial, safe comment or post that likely adds little to the discussion. Rapidly rising in popularity
Antonyms: spicy take; bait.
“Thanks for the milquepost. Do you have any other insights you’d like to add?”

Not financial advice/NFA (noun): A disclaimer used by YouTubers when discussing financial matters to indicate they are not liable for any financial losses you may incur for following their advice. Any gains, however, may be used to promote their channel.
“This is not financial advice but I think people are sleeping on Evolving Skies. At this price it’s a good buying opportunity.”

PC (noun): ‘Personal Collection’. Used primarily by flippers to differentiate items they intend to keep themselves instead of list for sale in the short to medium term.
“I got some sweet new pickups for the PC”

Popped Up (phrasal verb): To became available for sale.
“I had to cop this box because I wasn’t sure when this would next pop up”

Pull the trigger (phrasal verb): To purchase.
“Has anyone heard about a possible Eevee Heroes reprint? Wondering if I should wait or pull the trigger now”

Scalper (noun): A person who buys an item from a retail outlet with the sole aim of immediately re-selling it on the secondary market for monetary gain.
“I got to Target before they opened but wasn’t able to get any Vivid Voltage ETBs. Some scalper emptied the whole shelf into his cart and didn’t leave any for anyone else”

Slabbed (adjective; past participle of ‘to slab’): Describing a card that has been encased by a grading company in a tamper-proof case.
“Raw that card goes for like 10 bucks, but slabbed probably 5-10 times that”

Subbed (past participle of ‘to sub’): short for ‘submitted’. Refers to an item or items that have been sent to a third part for authentication.
“I’ve subbed probably a dozen moonbreons in my time. I got a handful of 10s, a couple of 9s, and one or two 6s.”

Vinty(adjective; short for vintage)
A referance to vintage cards. “This vinty pikachu was my fathers”

Zard/Zardy boy/Charizord (noun): Alternative names for Charizard, the first or second most popular Pokémon. Immune to tearing its ACL; sometimes referred to as the Mickey Mantle of Pokémon.
“I must have opened a hundred packs but never pulled the Zard”

Lol roasting me today! I like those terms. To be fair I spend a good amount of time on ig. I try to stay pure but perhaps I’ve been tainted.

The minute I sell something “for the community” though I want you to block me from e4.

I personally hate the term minty, community and copped

I do use PC a lot. Probably sounds weird to people who just collect. But I think people who buy to sell and buy to collect use PC a lot because sometimes it’s an easy way to differentiate
