The Grey Hat Pikachu: Collector, Investor, or Dreamer? (survey)

  • Yes, I have one
  • Yes, I have more than one
  • No, but it’s a dream card of mine
  • No, and it’s not a card I’m interested in owning

Hey everyone,

The Grey Hat Pikachu has been absolutely booming lately, hitting new all-time highs and cementing its status as a top-tier grail card. While there’s a great thread already discussing its price, this survey has a different purpose: to get a real-time snapshot of the community’s mindset toward this card.

I believe your choice on this poll reveals more than just ownership; it tells a story about your approach to the hobby.

  • “Yes, I have one” could mean you’re a passionate collector who finally got their grail.
  • “Yes, I have more than one” might indicate a more strategic, investment-focused mindset.
  • “No, but it’s a dream card of mine” speaks to the true collector who is striving for their goal.
  • “No, and it’s not a card I’m interested in owning” suggests a collector who has different priorities, or is simply not interested in this particular card.

Please be honest! All votes are completely anonymous, so you can feel free to vote without worrying about any judgment.

Thanks for taking the time to participate!

P.S. To the mods: I know there’s another Grey Hat thread. This one is for a poll only, but if it’s not a good fit, please feel free to merge or delete. Thank you!

I was actually looking forward to get it back when it was announced because i collect Van Gogh-inspired stuff but the situation was so awful it made me hate this card.

For those who own a Grey Hat Pikachu, this poll is a fantastic way to gauge the current market sentiment. You can see how many other people already have a copy and, more importantly, how many new collectors are actively seeking one. This information is key to understanding if the demand is still high, which could support a continued strong price.

For those who don’t have one but are interested in the card’s future, the results give you a direct look at the demand curve. A high number of “dream card” votes means the demand is very real and likely to keep the price elevated. It helps you decide if now is the right time to buy or if you should wait and see.

It’s all about supply and demand, and this survey helps us all get a better handle on the “demand” side of the equation.

Let’s keep the votes coming!

I voted this, but am not passionate about the card at all. I find the art execution rather tacky and the drama surrounding the release is just a reflection of the money-driven frenzy we live in now.

Van Gogh is revered so much in Dutch culture that I was very excited for the release. Conceptually it is a great release and I also warmed up to the artwork (I feel the post cards and other paintings released did a much better job in capturing the essence of the actual arts).

However, the execution was really lacking and it was poor to see what happened at the Museum. To be very honest, I was not really expecting it.

Even if it did not fit my collection goals, I would have liked to own one as a personal copy. However, I came to a realization that the price right off the gate was starting to be more and more steep for me to personally justify buying it.

Love the tie-in concept but I will probably never own it.

Cheers!

I’d rather have Topps.

I have multiple that I have from the original release that I just never graded or sold. So idk if I traditionally fit in the multiple copies, but I do

Yeah, I was trying to be a bit ironic with the “dream card” part, but it looks like I missed the mark. You’re right, “I want it, but I don’t own it yet” would have been much clearer! Thanks for the feedback.

hey, its still an important message for anyone who may be new and a lurker.

DREAM BIGGER THAN MODERN PROMOS

I have a hard time comprehending why it’s as popular and pricey as it is, especially considering the pop report.

For me, it’s just a bit boring. I understand it’s a Van Gogh inspired card, but Van Gogh’s self portrait works aren’t nearly as fascinating as his surreal landscape paintings. A close-up shot of a Pikachu wearing a hat just doesn’t do it for me in the same exact way the ponchos don’t.

I voted for dream card though I don’t actually intend to buy it since it went way past my budget a long time ago and I don’t see it ever returning to that point. It’s a nice card and could’ve been part of a series of tributes to different artists since Scream cards also exist, but that idea is dead now due to how the distribution went.

I voted “No and it’s not a card I’m interested in owning” based strictly on the current price. Yet I also do not expect this card to be cheaper anytime soon either which reduces my interest.

Even ignoring the massive price spike, I should have still purchased a few back during release based on the art and release history.

I’m not a hater, I think it’s a great card tbh - just too expensive for a common card for me.

I absolutely love the card. I really like Van Gogh as an artist and I think this colab was extremely well done. I got mine at the rerelease on PC so I only had like $40 into it. I recently spent the money and got it graded as a 10 with the idea that I would flip it for a lower grade copy to crack for my binder. Then it spiked to crazy amounts. I pulled the trigger and bought an 8 to crack for my binder at $430. I personally think it is too expensive and would not buy the card even at the 8 price but I plan on moving my 10 at the next show I go to so I will be very up regardless. So currently I fall in the own more than one category but I do not plan on being in that category for long. I plan on owning one but not more than one.

I have this from the initial release, but mainly bought it for my Kimura binder collection. I don’t feel that strongly about it either way, and would have been very tempted to grade and sell by now if it wasn’t for the artist binder.

I voted “I have one..” but I don’t consider it as a grail. I dont even collect Pikachus, I just got it as a free promo from the Pokemon Center. But still, its nice to own one sealed

Not a hater at all since I’m glad this card is accessible for those who want it (high PSA 10 price notwithstanding), but it’s never actually done it for me in terms of artwork. I liked the other Van Gogh inspired artworks much better. And now, unfortunately, Grey Hat has become associated in my mind with this distasteful hype period we are in and so has taken on a negative connotation by association. Same as the gold star dogs. Moonbreon skirted that line in my brain, but I liked that artwork, ES is legend, and that boom felt much more enjoyable to me. Could still happen if people get too crazy shilling it up again.

Next step in my evolution I can’t quite seem to get to is targeting cards exactly like this that are overly hyped, make no sense to me in terms of fundamentals, and that I don’t like or want in my collection anyway and use them to print money. Maybe when I retire I’ll find time to bother with cards I don’t care for as much as I bother with and pursue cards I do care for.

Exactly this. I was lucky enough to get a free one and it sits in my promo binder. I enjoy the art but I don’t see it as a “grail”

“Yes, I have one”. I have one that I graded a 10. While I like the card, I don’t consider it to be a grail of any kind. For the time being I’m happy to have it but I will consider parting with it in the future if it helps me obtain a card I do consider to be a personal grail.
