I was fortunate to get a bunch directly from the Pokemon Center at launch. At this point I’ve graded them all and have sold them off one by one as the price has gone up and spent the proceeds on cards I actually want. I got unlucky I guess and only one graded a 10, so I’m batting below .200 somehow.
I kept one (not the 10) as although it’s not a card I’ve felt like I actually wanted, I wouldn’t want to not have one in my collection. As silly as that sounds. The card just feels emblematic of this brief era of collecting (the past two years or so). The one I kept also looks like a coin flip of a 9/10 so I might eventually re-grade it.
Voted “No, and it’s not a card I’m interested in owning.”
It’s… fine? I’m not in a place for super “high value” collecting at this point (even if I bought a few now-expensive cards while they were low,) but even if I was… I would rather go for the Magikarp Poncho Pikachu or one of the Poncho Eevees. Even if it crashed back down to mid-range, I’d rather get another card like the Pikachu Rumble one.
No hate to people who enjoy it and there is clearly a lot of appeal. Just not my cup of tea.
The multiple choices didn’t align with my thoughts on the card so I didn’t vote. I think the concept is neat but I’m not interested at the current price. If it comes down to a price I’m comfortable with I’ll be happy to pick it up. If it doesn’t I’m fine with that too. I won’t lose sleep either way. I guess you could say I’m lukewarm
My cousin and his family were living in the Netherlands during the promotion and his kids liked Pokemon, so I alerted them that they should go and if they could get me a card, that would be nice.
I wound up getting one through Pokemon center so I didn’t worry about them actually sending it.
When the price first surged, I sent them a link to an article and told them to make sure to keep any cards they got in good condition.
He texted back saying “OMG, I had no idea it was worth that much, I’ll post it right away”
I told him not to bother. I had gotten another copy for myself and to just hang on to that one for his kids
Thanks to all the e4 members! The survey has already surpassed 100 votes.
Based on the results so far, we can say that within this forum, around 50% of the people are not interested in and do not own the Grey Hat Pikachu. At least one-quarter of the voters own at least one copy of the card.
Since e4 is a niche community of dedicated collectors, I don’t think this poll represents all collectors worldwide. But let’s imagine for a moment it did. If we assume there are 10 million Pokémon collectors in the world (a very rough estimate, but let’s use it for a thought experiment), that would mean 5 million people could be interested in this card.
We don’t know the official print run, but some sources suggest that 100,000 copies were distributed just to retailers in the Netherlands. My guess is the worldwide print run is probably somewhere between 200,000 and 1 million copies. Assuming some of those are lost or destroyed, the supply is only a fraction of the potential demand—perhaps as low as 1/5 of it in the most optimistic scenario.
Whilst the art itself is pretty decent, I can’t look at the card without being reminded about the current state of the habee. Everything I dislike about pokemon right now is encapsulated perfectly in this 1 card
I totally get the lack of enthusiasm for this card given the drama around the release and now the insane price point it has climbed to in such a short period of time. That said, for me this is one of my favorite modern releases (along with the stamp promos). I really enjoy when Pokemon ties in with historical art and I wish they could find a way to do it more often without everyone turning into crime lords! Full disclosure that I own multiple copies of the card, but I’m pretty content to sit on them unless I can sell one for something I really want but couldn’t otherwise afford. I also said it when the card came out, but I’d be just as happy if it was worthless and I could have a binder full of them, haha.
I hate that these words have been strung together to make an accurate sentence. I really strongly dislike, maybe even resent, the felt hat promo. It represents a lot of what’s “wrong” with the hobby (in my eyes at least, clearly very many people thing everything is healthy and fine and normal). I was interested in getting one initially because it’s a cool tie to something outside of Pokémon, not unlike the Scream promos. But man I hate seeing them now
I agree with others, it’s the embodiment of what some of us dislike about modern Pokemon collecting. Pumping, hype, side hustle culture, hoarding multiple copies while preaching the immense beauty and cultural impact of the equivalent of a WOTC Black star promo. In summary, peak 2025 hahbee.
In the end it’s a funny card, I would have appreciated if it were a cool entry-level staple in modern collections, but 1000-2000$ (nuts) is the floor for plenty of cards nowadays I guess. Wonderful. Thankfully I’m not interested in buying one.
PS:
Don’t get me wrong - I actually see it as a “Grail“ and i _was_ going to buy it when it was around $70 but I was actually living through that situation - trying to buy it and stuff.
When I was on Ebay preparing to buy it I kept thinking about how upset I was. And remembering those videos where people fighting for that card in a museum. It kind of made me not want it, in fact - I felt kind of dirty even touching this whole thing. So i proceeded to buy some of Sw-Sh cards i wanted for so long (it was the end of 2023 and for example i managed to get Giratina V for a really good price compared to what it’s going for now, so i guess i’m not complaining).
But yeah i can totally see this card going for an insane amount of money 5+ years later. It’s not even at its peak right now. I’m a huge Vang Gogh fan (i’m kind of an artist myself and when i was having one of “those“ moments the story of Gogh was always coming to me in mind and i kept remembering that even famous artists had such problems in life and conflicts with art and it worked for me as a therapy so the figure of Van Gogh was always with me as a support).
I guess i will buy it when it will be more inflated and it will make me even more upset hahaha
PS:
For those who want to add some more stylish Van Gogh merch i would highly recommend Playmobil - they made a few different versions. Some of them can even be a neat display piece for a raw Pikachu card in a sleeve
I have this card, which isn’t too surprising as a Dutch Pikachu collector. It’s definitely far from a grail card for me, though. Just one of the hundreds of Pikachu cards released each year. But since I’m Dutch myself, it is also definitely more special to me personally than most other Pikachu promos (or set cards).
When it was first announced, I loved the release, and I actually saw it as an opportunity to visit the Museum for the first time, while at the same time go home with a new Pikachu card. Unfortunately, the card was already out-of-stock by the time I had my visit, due to all the scalpers that literally entered and left the Museum within 10 minutes, just for the card.. So I had to buy it for 85 bucks when I got back home. The visit to the Museum itself was still worth it, though.
Right now, the card is just one of the many other cards in my Pikachu collection. I view it pretty similar as the also non-holo FA Japanese Munch Pikachu promo.
I kinda wish they made the Grey-Hat Pikachu Dutch instead of English, which would make it more special in my opinion, and perhaps also less popular/expensive. Then again, maybe not, if the recently released Simplified Chinese cards are any indication of non-English/non-Japanese cards. But since most of the younger Dutch population is fluent in English, and Dutch TCG cards haven’t been released since the Fossil set, it was to be expected.
I did also get all six Pokémon Van Gogh post cards (five at the Museum itself, and the Eeeve - which was also out of stock - later online). It’s a shame those other five artworks didn’t see any TCG cards tbh. The Sunflora is probably my favorite of the six.
EDIT: Here are those six as reminder (not my picture, just a picture from Google Images - I’m currently not home):
Then I’ll have to check my Eevee, which was bought online instead of at the Museum itself. But iirc it was a Dutch seller, so it’s likely the same version.
EDIT: I’m home, it’s indeed also with white border, like my other five post cards.
I second wishing the promo was in Dutch! Really feels like a missed opportunity and maybe could have deterred or lessened the nearly feral craze it had if it wasn’t in English.
