I hope someone will be able to complete a full set now, it would be beautiful to see!

Wow indeed! I wonder if it would’ve gone even higher if there were decent pics of it that weren’t shot with a 2004 flip phone in a dark room.

I’m so glad Snap Magikarp finally appeared! And it went like 100k more than I was ready to even think of bidding so I’m not mad  If the winner is someone from E4 pls send pics.

Other than Snap Magikarp, there’s also the low key Suzukisan card.

That was a really wild ride to follow; I’m glad I got to see the Karp finally pop up.

But who the hell has 130k to drop on a Pokemon card? No shame, I’m just saving up for a starter home down payment and I can not even fathom having that much money to spend on a single card. Wild stuff.

That was a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Pokemon TCG history. Potentially the one and only copy to ever appear on the public market of one of the most iconic species. If you’re deep enough and can navigate in that niche of the hobby it is also a guaranteed store of value.
Keep in mind that most collectors here are in their 30s and 130k seems like a lot but it’s peanuts in the sports or art market. In 15 years we may very well see an additional digit on a piece like that. It’s not really just a card.

Is 130k a lot to you?

To the average 30y old Pokemon collector it is, would be hard to deny it would be an almost lifechanging amount of money.

To me specifically I couldn’t think of a better item to park 130k for the mid-long term. Given my knowledge of Pokemon and the other markets I’m into (Poker, Real Estate, Stocks) nothing compares as a financial opportunity. Let alone the appreciation from a collector’s standpoint, that’d be invaluable.

Wow nice sale! Great to see so much love for Magikarp. :stuck_out_tongue:

Props to whoever is willing to take the risk of buying a 6-figure raw card from Japan. From my understanding the buyer has practically no recourse on that platform, if the card comes damaged or not as described. All I can assume is one must have a pretty high net worth to be willing to risk that much money. I’m not at all saying it’s a bad call, because obviously this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Just, personally, I think it would always be beyond my own risk tolerance, even if my net worth was 100x the value of the card.

If it’s a Japanese buyer, I’m sure instore pickup is/was an option. Gotta remember it’s not just westerners targeting these cards

since were talking about magikarp lets take a little shift and speculate what maxmoefoe’s gyarados could be now. I think it’s an 8 so it has to be worth more than even when the video about it came out. Right? Of course there’s no way to pin an exact price but I have to believe that this sale only helped that card and all of the other snap cards lying in wait to go on the market

Besides, all points towards the card being authentic.

Good pictures were posted on the Twitter of Bookoff, and the original winner of the magikarp back in 1998 is from the Aichi prefecture, where the card surfaced again today.

The final bidder looks a bit iffy to me. A brand new YA member bidding on a 13,000,000 yen auction? I guess it can happen.

I could see someone who has never bought on YJ making an account just for this.

As sparky mentioned, I am being sarcastic.

“Is (insert amount of money) a lot to you” is a meme on the forum and discord. I was commenting on how closely your post resembled that meme.

While I’m not sure if I agree with the financial analysis, I definitely agree with the collector analysis. I feel like a card like this is basically priceless to the right person with the right resources and financial goals. It’s been over 20 years and we’ve never seen this card.

The bidder is legit. Someone who we believe is middlemanning the card posted a screenshot of their successful bid on instagram. All indications are that they are completing the purchase.
