i need to buy some evolving skies packs now. This discussion is not good for my wallet
i see pack weighing concerns all the time on social media. for a long time, i thought people were just very misinformed, and was spreading unnecessary FUD. I am fairly certain modern sets (before fusion strike) are not weighable such from SM & SWSH. I thought fusion strike was weighable at first, but only because they had the code cards mixed in the initial print wave. I havent opened many packs since evolving skies, so I donāt know, but my friend claims that pretty much every set starting with fusion strike (even after fixing the code card issue) all the way to new scarlet & violet sets are weighable.
is this true? and if so, why would pokemon actively work to prevent weighing only to just not care anymore? I wouldnt be surprised if scarlet & violet ended up being weighable because of the new rarities inside the packs, and how the big pulls take up a certain slot (i think one reverse holo slot for an illustration rare). either way, its just disappointing. i dont buy that many english products, but if i do, its usually products that contain Evolving skies and sets before that, and i just end up breaking down boxes/tins/pokeballs/etc and sell the packs to cut costs on shipping.
Every set since Fusion Strike has had character rares in the reverse slots. I believe the only āweighableā packs are just the packs that contain both a character rare in the reverse and an ultra rare in the rare slot. Not really an issue imo because that combo isnāt exactly common. Furthermore, Evolving Skies doesnāt have any of these character rares, so unless Iām missing something, thereās really no rational reason for a fear of buying 36 loose packs for 40% less money than a box of this set. One has to go up or the other has to come down at some point.
There are quite a few YouTubers who claim that packs can be weighed, which I am sure contributes to the fear of modern buyers.
If you search āPokemon weighableā in YouTube, youāll see a ton of videos on the topic.
Modern Japanese can be weighed for sure, not sure about English.
English can as long as it is past the xy break sets. Its not a method that ive seen advertised anywhere though. But it is very simple and only a matter of time before people pick up on it. I wouldnt recomend loose packs anyway.
Iām kinda surprised he didnt lean into the āmy hits were stolen from meā mindset. I was fully expecting him to go full reddit conspiracy mode, but im happy he didnt.
Havenāt followed things as close lately, but I guess Hasbro must have some plans to rebound? Iāll have to catch up on some of these Rudy vids.
Sounds a bit optimistic to me in the short term.
Theres something quite soothing about listening to Rudy open loose Steam Siege packs
My modern boxes arenāt $150 out the gate?
When the chase card is a random trainer and the pulls are way higher. Lol could have called this a mile away, oh wait I did;)
I donāt follow other TCGs much, but everything heās saying about MTG LOTR with the insane bounties on some ring cards, along with unprecedented hype, and a complete neglect or disdain for modern sounds exactly like the Japanese Pokemon market right now. These lottery type situations with these cards lately seems like itās having a moment.
Maybe itās the lifelong Pokemon fan in me but hearing someone talk about Cards from a market only perspective honestly pisses me off Jokes aside itās clear Rudy doesnāt have that connect to identify what makes a set popular
Yeah, Rudy I feel has missed out on a lot of opportuninty in Pokemon over the years for this reason and others. Obviously heās made a lot on all the pre-2020 stuff he bought Iām sure, but I still think he downplays the singles out there a lot and doesnāt really pay close attention to them and how popular they can make a set.
For example, I know in some videos he basically writes off vintage singles entirely due to āsupply concernsā which could be valid with some sets (Base Unlimited, etc) but thereās still a lot of great cards out there and the demand is very strong on them. Modern has similar principles as well, and even Iām guilty of underestimating some cards/sets, especially seeing how much Japanese S&M has blown up this year.
