The future of new collectibles and trends

Collectibles (including modern era MTG & Pokemon) that are advertised as “collectibles” or “limited edition only” are probably not going to do well (:

Just throwing my opinion out there but i think anything can be a collectible. shoes, phones amiibo, packs of gum, chips etc etc. like does anybody remember like those 3d doritos ?! man i’d consider that a collectible. Collectibles just represent a moment in time like a snapshot of a memory. The more people with similar moments the more sought after of such collectible. i’d like to believe that most collectors here are in it for that nostalgia because when he/she was growing up pokemon was huge and defined a big chunk of their childhood which explains why the market had huge spikes over that past couple years those 90’s kids are grown up and buying pokemon for nostalgia.

if you believe that iphones, ipads are the fad in this generation collect those and itll probably fetch a pretty penny in 2050 as vintage  same thing for modern the reason’s why people are stocking like evolutions, hidden fates, and some other modern is because it brought alot of people back into the hobby and defined a moment for alot of people. if you are looking for a new big collectible just think of some stuff that played a big part in many peoples lives especially if that thing is something with a limited supply. Just my 2 cents

Reading this made me realize that … lowkey … buying old iPads is the move lol

I think for any collectible to emerge, it has to have exclusivity and desirability. I’m sure there’s a ton of exclusive cards in other TCGs but they’re not desirable, something that I think established hobbies like Pokemon, Yugioh, and MtG have that frontrunner advantage on. I still hold that for any collectible to truly succeed, it has to first fail as a collectible in a sense. Like people have said, if everyone’s treating it as a collectible from the get go, then it might be desirable but it’s not very exclusive.

That being said, I do think there’s a very important aspect of supply and demand that’s implicit in these conversations. Hidden Fates is a modern set that, for the immediate future, is incredibly collectible. It’s both exclusive and desirable. It’s not necessarily the most exclusive on an absolute level, but there’s so much demand for it that on a relative level it appears to be very exclusive. I don’t know if this level of demand for Hidden Fates can/will continue, but it’s at least a demonstration that there are ways to make Modern collectable in my opinion.
