The Curious Case of the Curious Case (“Error” Trophy card)

Hi everyone! I’ve got a fun case for y’all, and would love to hear what you would do in my situation.

I’ve been living in Japan for a few years now, and enjoying Pokémon a bit more on the competitive side than on the collection side; although performing well in the former also contributes to the later! Point in case: this 3rd place Victory Decoration I was awarded in Nagoya’s Champion’s League last year.

It goes without saying that it is one of my most cherished belongings, as it is both the rarest card I’ve ever owned and the proof of my best competitive accomplishment to date.

To my knowledge, to this day there were only 70 copies of the 3rd place Victory Decoration distributed to semi finalists of major events over the last three competitive seasons. (And with the new games generation coming soon, I also wouldn’t be surprised if they changed the trophy cards next season.)
To be more specific, there are only 20 copies of the 2018 season version, and even more specifically only 6 copies were printed with the Bronze 2018 Nagoya stamp.

But there’s one more thing that makes this version of Victory Decoration even more unique.
You see, it was put in the wrong case.
While all trophies for this event were supposed to be displayed in cases featuring the blue Champion’s League 2018 logo, all 12 trophies for Nagoya’s Champion’s League were mistakenly displayed in cases stamped with the green logo for the Certified Champion’s League, another big event held once per year.

The mistake hasn’t been repeated ever since, which means I’m in possession of one of the only six mis-cased “error” 3rd place Victory Decoration, where the case’s logo and the card’s stamp don’t match. But while six were awarded that day, there might actually be less than six in the world right now.

Because there’s more to this story! A few moments after we had been handed out our trophies, another player with a keen eye pointed out to a staff member that the trophies were displayed in the wrong cases. You can bet there was a bit of a “Whoopsie!” from the staff in charge, as they struggled to figure out how the blunder could have happened and what should be done. While we players never found out why our trophies were mis-cased in the first place, we were told that we would soon be sent replacement cases with the correct logo.

And indeed a few days later a brand new empty case featuring the blue Champion’s League 2018 logo (no extra Trophy card included, allas) was sent to my address. Included in the box was a letter apologising for the trouble, and asking me to kindly send back the error case once I’m done swapping them.

Well, I’m not done swapping them and I probably never will. I do wonder though how many of my fellow Japanese players kindly obeyed and sent back their original case? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that a few of these mis-cased cards have already been re-cased.
As for me, I’d like to keep my trophy as it was on that very happy day, and I certainly wouldn’t want to risk damaging my precious card while doing some kind of revisionist swap.

Plus, I now have an extra official trophy case, giving me the power to turn just about any card into a Trophy card! :sunglasses:

My choice is made, but what would you lovely people do?
A) Keep the card in its original trophy
B) Swap the cases to have the case match the card’s stamp
C) Have the card PSA graded
D) Something else

Thanks for reading my story!

D) put damaged card in there

A) + building a display case that specifically fit both holders to hang them up the wall! Congrats on this great achievement!

Just want to say great job on winning the card

This is what I would do. Grade the card after scanning it and printing a colored copy.

Put the cut out printed version in the case with a real new back Pokémon card so you have the best of both worlds. Your trophy card properly protected with a grade and a display case with the exact same trophy card. No worries about having it displayed facing the sun!

Congrats on placing 3rd in the Nagoya Champions league. Since you were present for the award ceremony, would you mind answering this question?

Does the fourth place winner receive a 3rd place victory decoration card? From what I know, I think the 2018/19 CL does not award the 4th place winner a trophy card but I could be wrong. My evidence is pictures from the award ceremony posted on Twitter by Pokémon. There is only 3 winners on stage instead of 4.

Congrats on your tournament performance as well as the wonderful, organized post:)

I would leave everything as is. Plus I’d keep them all together like one happy family whether in a box or on display. They are all needed to properly tell the story.

P.S. print out your full post above and keep the paper with the cases.

I’d do what you did and leave the card as-is because of the amazing story, but I think the guilt would eat me alive not sending the second case back when asked to. That being said, having it contributes significantly to the overall tale.

That is one awesome, misprinted case. Do you think Pokemon will chase after you for the case back though? I feel like since they have all your details and information, it would not be a difficult thing to do.

On the other hand, keeping both cases I totally agree would be a special story to be told.

Id think that if it was that important where they would “come after you” they would have requested the return of the case before issuing the correct one.

Well, I mean it’s a Japanese run tournament though, and since it was Pokemon staff themselves who messed up it would be pretty rude to demand the participants to return the trophy case before issuing a new one.

What surprises me is that they actually asked for the trophy case back, which made me think they actually think it’s important? Otherwise for a big company they would just send a replacement and tell you to keep the misprinted one, don’t you think? (I mean they would have no use for a misprinted case and the costs of administration and return shipping may not even be worth it at this point.) Alternatively, they could have also said that any winners who want the correct trophy case can ship the original back for a free replacement, but the way they handled things made it seem like they really want this mistake to be corrected and get back the misprinted ones back. Maybe I’m just overthinking haha.

By “come after you” I don’t mean they’ll pay hayo a visit, but more like they’ll flag hayo and when hayo participates in future tournaments they’ll ask about the missing trophy case.

Holy smokes I died

Great story and congrats on placing.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts!

@chok, All Champion’s League tournaments award trophies to the top 4, with 3rd place and 4th place technically being tied 3rd and both getting the 3rd place trophy. 3rd and 4th place are both players who lost their semi-finals, but there’s no round with them face each other to sort out who’s 3rd and who’s 4th. (Although you could look at the detailed ranking from the whole event and figure out who had the better results based on their total win ratio and their opponent’s win ratio.)Fun fact: the other 3rd place player insisted on saying I was not officially 3rd place (I was) and that we were both 4th. Some people are weird :stuck_out_tongue:
The awards ceremony pictures you’ve seen might have been from Japan Nationals, which tend to have trophies only for 1st to 3rd place, and they don’t even have cards in them for some reason.

@garyis2000, Thanks! So you’d also display the empty case?
Btw, why should I print my post? Is it so that my grandchildren know the story when they find it in the cellar?

@nuttun,@merciersj, Yeah I also had second thoughts about not doing as I was kindly asked to do, but then again they did say to “swap the cases and send back the faulty case when I’m done” without specifying a deadline. Technically I’m not disobeying, I just haven’t obeyed yet!(and maybe probably certainly never will but who knows)
I don’t think they particularly care about it that much either, as I’ve already been in touch with their event staff and customer service since then and no one ever brought it up. If they were going to bring it up again, I think they would have done so later that year when they sent me my invitation for Worlds. (Maybe it would have been along the lines of “Congrats on qualifying for Worlds! We’d like our case back though, no one must know of our shameful mistake; you have three days.”)

I probably would display both cases. Then, when somebody asks, you can explain the great story.
Re printing your post…exactly. Too often provenience (provenance) gets lost over time and stories get bastardized. This prevents that from happening;)

Did I understand right that you’re going to be at worlds? If so, did you put in for your e4 name badge?

@KingPokemon, I actually got my Worlds invite last year (2018 season), but I also managed to score a job just before Worlds. It can be pretty hard for a foreigner to get a good non-teaching job in Japan, and taking a leave in your first month on the job isn’t the best way to leave a good impression on a Japanese employer, so I decided to prioritise my career and give Worlds a shot another time
Said job was very demanding and I didn’t get to practice my Pokémon skills as well as I wanted this season, so I didn’t manage to repeat last year’s feat just yet; but I’ll do my best next season!
