TCA Gaming's new video: Glossy commons from prerelease kits

Posting the video for reference here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl1zJKfZO_k

Starting at around the 03:51 mark he talks about the glossy commons that came from the build & battle kits. I was interested in them, so I checked through the prerelease packs I had left (20 total) and came across zero, but also wasn’t able to find most of the cards in general that TCA Gaming has in the video. No grass pokemon at all, no Growlithe, only the #27 Litten, no Squirtle… With my sample size, I should have every variation of the prerelease packs, because there are generally only a few.

Is there a piece missing of the puzzle?

Alright well, once I had some time I dug through all my Unbroken Bonds common/uncommon bulk. I found seven common sets from booster packs that are all distinctly glossy:

I was actually really surprised at how glossy they are. They are remarkably similar to the Vending Series cards:

I opened 382 packs of Unbroken Bonds. At that rate, less than 2% of my packs contained glossy commons (0% of my packs contained a single Reshiram/Charizard :sob: ). I think it’s a cool variation with how pronounced the glossy texture is and makes it distinctly different.

Just figured I’d share my findings!

Interesting video!

Even more cards to collect?! :stuck_out_tongue:

@quuador now you need a Glossy Pika

Does this only affect Unbroken Bonds?

Wanna trade?

Already send an PM to @alecpokemon , since I see two Pikachus in his picture.

No, I’ve seen these Glossy cards before with other Sun & Moon released cards. I think somewhere on reddit. Will see if I can find the post(s).

EDIT: Found one: https://www.reddit.com/r/pkmntcgcollections/comments/74sh14/i_got_a_few_odd_glossy_cards_in_a_shining_legends/

To quote the post:

So apparently some cards in the packs from a Shining Legends ETB were Glossy for this person (all Uncommons), similar as all non-Holo Commons in the Unbroken Bonds pre-release Build & Battle kits.

Bought one of these Battle & Build boxes which arrived yesterday. Two of the four packs also contained these Glossy Common cards. I currently have three more boxes incoming to see if I can pull any more.

The cards aren’t as glossy as Japanese Glossy promos/vending machine cards, but they’re still definitely very noticeably glossy (unlike the semi-glossy backs of the Australian Red Logo packs or Base Set cards, for which you’ll need a flashlight/angle to see the difference); which you can also see in the pictures and video of this thread.

PS: The Glossy Commons I pulled were: 16/214 Tangela; 46/214 Krabby; 27/214 Litten; 152/214 Lickitung; 145/214 Spearow; 128/214 Meltan; 93/214 Rhyhorn; 150/214 Doduo; 141/214 Spritzee; 98/214 Gligar. Will update here once I’ve opened the three boxes that are incoming (and I also have the Pikachu incoming from Alec, thanks again  ).

At first I was confused thinking they came from the premade decks inside the Build & Battle boxes, but it seems clear now they come from the packs inside! Thank you for the update

Yeah, it’s indeed the packs inside the box. The Deck itself didn’t contained any Glossy cards in the box I opened. And two of the four packs contained these Glossy Commons. You notice them right away when you open the pack tbh.

Do you think these differences are distinct enough for PSA to file them as a variation?

Nope. PSA is a mess when it comes to what they grade and don’t grade lately (No Rarity Japanese Base Set Venusaur and Raichu aren’t graded at all anymore; No Damage Ninetales, No HP Persian, and similar errors aren’t graded anymore). They already don’t differentiate their labels for official differences, like the ©1999-2000 Base Set, so they’ll definitely won’t differentiate a glossy surface error like this I’m afraid.

I opened my UB 36 pack booster box and got plenty of glossies. I don’t think they are just in the prerelease kits.

Apparently I was just lucky with my first box. Not a single Glossy card in the other three boxes combined. :slightly_frowning_face:

I have found that all the Volcanion Rare holos 25/214 in the Charizard Rashiram league battle deck, are glossy. I haven’t heard of or seen any other rare holo glossys. I bought a couple of cards, from five different eBay sales, of the League deck and a couple from five places of booster holos. All league deck 25/214 Holos’ were glossy and the other holos were normal paper finish. So there must be a legitimate count of the Volcanion league battle deck Holos.

Tapu Koko Prism star has a glossy finish too in the league battle decks.

I swear I’ve gotten tons of glossy cards out of theme decks over the years. Or maybe they’re just higher quality print in general

These people are smart by posting this type of video.

Step 1: buy those uncommon sets that most people don’t want, meanwhile, establish a decent inventory to sell in the future.
Step 2: make a video on YT about these sets and say they are undervalued.
Step 3: wait.
Step 4: TA DA~ free money.

Organic growth. A true legend.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the moment you watch these videos, they have already scoped most of the cards on the market. only a few are left.
ITS ALREADY TOO LATE.
