Stumbled on a motherload

A couple weeks ago… I decided to go to a music festival, followed by a little house party afterward.
A rare occasion for me, as I don’t drink or party at all anymore. But it was a special occasion, so I had a few drinks.

I only vaguely remember, but one of my good friends came to me, introduced me to someone and asked if I could take a look at his pokemon collection to see if it’s worth anything.
Now, this happens all the time and I’m sure you guys all know that almost all of the time, it ends up being some heavy played / damaged childhood collection binder worth pretty much nothing.
Well, I took a ride around the block to this guys house and he broke out the collection.

he starts by taking out not 1, not 2, but THREE SEALED neo genesis booster boxes.
Followed by a sealed neo rev booster box, and a fossil booster box!
I was blown away!
Then he broke out the binders!

2 binders stacked with hundreds of WOTC holo’s. Everything from base set to neo.
multiples of every single card. Between english and japanese he must have 30 of the legendary birds.
There was probably over 300 holo’s total.
One by one I pulled them out, and every single one of them was pack fresh / nm / mint.

It was a bit overwhelming for my drunk brain. I told him I need to come back another day.
The owner needed my help with everything because he knows nothing about pokemon.

I have now gone over a few times, helping him sleeve his cards and get them into card savers.
I decided, ALL of them are going to PSA.
I am also facilitating a deal for the owner to sell the cards.
We have reached a private sale price pending of $100k for the sealed booster boxes.

but yeah, I just wanted to share and document the story with you guys because I thought it was really cool.

What’s your opinions on the booster box sale?
from what I can see, the agreed price is nearly record breaking for these boxes.
Maybe I’m wrong? maybe it’s too cheap?
The market is on fire currently.

I’ll update this story when the singles come back from PSA

My opinion is hot diggity dawg! Amazing story. Good thing he has stumbled to someone like you, and not someone looking to take advantage of him. I bet sleeving them all individually was a trip down memory lane!

That’s pretty awesome! Much better than the usual “I’ve got some old Pokemon cards in my closet.”

@cosrob this is why we don’t compare genesis Lugia to deoxys Rayquaza

We can settle it on showdown

Crazy story, thanks for sharing. I can’t imagine how mad it was for the guy to hear how much his old cards are worth!

Way to be honest and help him. I hope your honesty will be rewarded.

Were the boxes already in plastic cases?

Thats awesome. Whats the story behind them? Did he just stumble upon them himself, or was he a speculator? Would love to hear his adventure so far!

Wow - what an incredible collection to stumble upon. What’s the story behind it all? Did this guy have wealthy parents when he collected as a kid, or were these cards purchased in his teenage years?

When I was collecting as a child, booster boxes weren’t available. Everyone bought packs at the nearest big box retail store or shopping mall. It wasn’t until later in the 2000s, when I first visited card stores, that I realized that booster packs could be purchased in much larger amounts (e.g., boxes, cases).

It amazes me that some young people had access to booster boxes when they were growing up! And that some kids in 2025 are ripping cases.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these were purchased between 2004 and 2009. This is when I heard stories bout shipping containers.

he actually got these cards for free.
Sad part of the story, the cards were owned by his friend, who passed away.
But.. he passed away 10 years ago!
So the current owner has had these for 10 years without really knowing their value.

From the looks of the binders filled with singles, it’s pretty obvious that the original owner was purchasing these booster boxes and opening them.
He has multiples / random amounts of all the holos. everything from the same sets.

Since he died 10 years ago, he was probably purchasing these boxes around the $100-$200 mark between 2010-2013

Very thoughtful of his friend to put his cards in his will before he died!

If a sale does go through Id reach out to his close loved ones, and give them some comfort money knowing theyre worth that much now. Theyd appreciate it, and it would definitely surprise them.

Get drunk, find cards. That is the lesson here
