Should I wait for the market to shift to collect again?

They’re pokemon cards, not freshly mined gold. This isn’t a finite resource and TPC can print you all into the ground if they want. Vintage hits included, konami style.

Also, by definition someone has to buy at MSRP, before hoarding and scalping happen

Print runs by year:
2021: 9.1 billion
2022: 9.7 billion
2023: 11.9 billion
2024: 10.2 billion

So slight correction, 2024 saw a dip, while also meeting demand. Once the Pocket rocket took off, TPCi was caught with their pants down - was not quick enough to turn on the printers to burrr mode. They have to be in the process of expanding capacity at this point. Thus, the take we will never see MSRP again is a born in 2025 investorbro take

im sure they wont peace out at the first sign of a dip… just like how zillow bought up 1B of housing using their proprietary “algorithm” and then got absolutely wrecked

This is a trading card game first and foremost.

TPCi may be incompetent at estimating demand but they will be making attempts at getting cards into the hands of players because that’s the main purpose. This isn’t a crypto rug pull.

The fact that you don’t even consider that exposes your thinking and experience.

You’re right, it’s not a rugpull, because cards are only going up.

You can’t be serious right now? Create an account to troll everyone?

How am I trolling? We have seen what’s happening. Very wealthy people are getting into the hobby, including professional Wall Street level investors. This boom is different from 2016 and 2020. This isn’t a bubble; it’s a paradigm shift.

I just got off the horn with the president, he says he’s gonna tank the economy within the next few months so just hold tight and be ready to buy when everyone panic sells.

Putting guarantees on never again seeing in print modern product at MSRP on the secondary market and saying cards only go up is :troll:in’
Both those statements likely will not be true within the next 2 years. Either way, there are no guarantees in anything.

Umbreon from Prismatic was supposed to break the internet. It’s only gone down and with massive Prismatic releases this month, supply will increase drastically.

That would have been smart, avoid the :troll:

Don’t you see?! It’s only going up UP UP

Ha I saw that blip and figured that would be the zoomed in part. Will see that blip come back down with millions of packs being released weekly right now

Well I’ll just say this, I’ve never seen more people I met become millionaires in the past 5-6 years than I have in this community. So many ppl rode off into the sunset that it’s kinda sad.

Are you new to the hobby?

Exactly. And it’s just getting started. I think we’re not far off from a world where trading card ETFs are a reality.

Coming up on 10 years, so compared to some e4 members, yes I am a newbie

And it’s just getting started. I think we’re not far off from a world where trading card ETFs are a reality.

I think art and sports cards are a good counterexample to consider. They’ve been around for a while and are huge markets. But there are no real fine art/sports card ETFs as far as I know. There are some niche investment alternative investment funds that are in the space - but I think it still is and will remain niche in the investment world.

My 2 cents, capital is fickle for speculative assets - it’s 99% momentum and narrative. Money flows in fast and usually flows quickly out. So would be wary of saying “investors” rushing in now, esp. given past cycles in the card mkt, means that the money is here to stay. Sometimes, very rarely, things take on a life of their own - as much as I dislike it, I think crypto is one of those (and even then, crypto arguable provide some utility for things like transferring money, serving as a less-able-to-be-manipulated store of value, etc. so at some level it’s justified). Those are very rare exceptions…. and market downturns shake ppl out of speculative assets…

TLDR I have my doubts that there is some fundamental shift here w/ Pokemon cards… Rich ppl may continue to enter the market, but I think the ones that remain are folks who have a genuine appreciation of Pokemon, the history, etc. - I think that’s still a niche group of ppl at the end of the day.

I’m rather new to E4 so I can’t speak on being “old guard” or whatever but…

Your oldest video is 4 months old. You only have modern sealed. You are the “investor” you complain about.

Did anyone else scroll through his YouTube channel? There’s some extremely loony stuff in there. None of it is really Pokemon, just mostly a guy (presumably him) talking.

A lot of sexism, too. I only watched a clip of this video and it’s disgusting drivel.

I do not think this person is a troll but an extremely deranged man who just happened to dip their toes into Pokemon “investing.” Everyone on this forum has their own political beliefs, religious beliefs, moral compass, income level etc… but we all manage to meet in the middle to talk about one thing on fairly equal footing. Coming in here and trying to shit on other people while proudly advertising your slot app gambling is… an interesting method, to say the least.
