Sealed product outside of WOTC - thoughts on direction?

hey guys

Still fairly new to this so forgive me if this topic was elsewhere

I’m only a minor collector but i love sealed product mainly booster packs.

i’m just looking for opinions of what way you think the market will go for sealed product outside of WOTC. EX has definitely began to rise over the years but will the sets from D&P through to B&W follow suite?

I’m personally just looking to collect rather than invest but i still want to achieve my goals by getting sealed product before a so called price boom and i’m currently torn between bulk buying what i want now or continuing slow and steady purchases.

Of Course no one really knows as every set has different variables such as printed numbers, chase cards etc.

If there’s any fellow sealed product collectors then let me know your thoughts!

thanks

Impossible for anyone to give u an actual answer. But I personally doubt that there will be a massive price increase for those sets that will deter you from buying

The only thing that anyone can say for certain is the supply only moves in one direction

For some reason I feel like torturing myself right now–could anyone tell me how much EX booster boxes were going for ~5 years ago?

@raztendo Im not a sealed product collector for various reasons, but best advice I could give is to buy what you like, but also try to tackle whats most expensive first to knock those goals out of the way. For example, if wanting modern vs wotc sets, Wizards would be ideal seeing as theres less available as well as it being distinctively more in price. If wanting something like EX series over S&M, again the same concept stands seeing as theres a given expectation of older sets just having a higher probability of rising over those which are newer (even if not true, its something to consider). That being said, when it comes to modern rising in price over time, thats really unknown honestly and no matter how anyone could speculate what direction it might go it just cant be pinpointed even if we would like it to be so. And lastly to touch on buying slowly over time as opposed to bulk buying at once, thats dependent on many, many factors if you ask me. For example, if you have that extra cash to spend and want to and it will not affect your means of living in any way, go for it. However, most dont have that immediate capital on hand to do so, so slowly over time also works. I found for myself that the waiting game has proven time and time again toe best results for me, and it allowed me to get what i desire while still being able to have income and savings for all my other lifes needs as opposed to when I re started collecting and I just dumped dollar after dollar into the game.

Points I like to go by for myself as of now: Buy what I like, Buy within living means, Remember that there will always be another deal or card availability (at least in terms of set cards, which this was living proof i found in an issue recently searching for a typhlosion 17 from neo), try to hit the high priced items (if possible) first to get them out of the way, keep learning about the hobby, and to ultimately have fun in the process. Hope this helps

We have already seen massive price shift in the DP, DPt and HGSS boxes in the past year or so. They will even out over time I’m sure and I think most booster box prices that we saw last year are going to even out entirely or possibly drop. But the further along we go in the hobby the less and less available these series will be and the demographic that grew up with these sets and around this era of pokemon will begin to have more and more access to disposable income.

might go up, might go down, might stay flat.

I think the HGSS sets have a lot of potential

The prices on those sets have already substantially risen since late 2018/early 2019, when I was paying $200-500 for boxes within those sets. I’ve opened several cases of pretty much all of those sets in the last 6 months and have been selling d&p from $900-1500, platinum from $900-1500, hgss $800-$2000 and b&w from $500-1200.

I’m getting interest from various buyers on those boxes weekly. You should definitely go after those boxes when you have the chance.

Most around $500-1000 I believe.

I think a lot of sealed booster box cases from Diamond and Pearl era and up are stashed away, doesn’t mean they won’t grow in price but I don’t see them following WOTC or Ex series trend.

@mtajaj32
Cheapest ones like EX Power Keepers could be bought for ~$250, now the real value is closer to $2500 or more.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Just to be clear i’m not asking for the miracle answer just want some chatter and speculation about the subject as within my personal friend group i;m the only one who has the willpower to not open sealed product!

its crazy how much a set just goes up all of a sudden but its what we signed up for i guess!

Some great advice btw thanks
