Mad Magazine was my first personal collectible and yes, I still have them. First issue (though in comic form) was in 1952,
Truly the loss of an iconic brand.
Print media really struggles in this day and age, so it’s not very surprising that more and more of these classic pop culture magazines are going out. It’s such a shame though, I don’t know the quality of what recent publication has been but MAD has been around so long that it’ll still be referenced and copied for years to come.
Another one bites the dust. Sad say for print. I remember reading and picking these up as a kid when we would go grocery shopping. My favorite part about the magazine were the pages you would fold-in to create a different hidden picture. Guess kids and teens these days just weren’t into it.
This is really sad. It’s weird to witness an end to something so iconic and seemingly eternal.
I think you’re right about the experience and I would add even the culture around Mad being outdated. The magazine was all about zaniness, satire, parody, and just being on the edges or past the line of decency, which made it super appealing to those of us who came across it as youth in a pre-Internet culture. Reading it you felt like you were breaking the rules. However it’s notorious rebelliousness is vanilla against what teens or anyone looking for that outlet can find on the Internet. And beyond that, that sarcastic and skeptical tone is pretty ubiquitous in most online humor, basically eroding its relevance for most readers aside from nostalgia or hobby/collecting.
My dad had a subscription many years ago while I was in my preteens. He recently resubscribed a year or so ago. I think you 100% hit the nail on the head. I remember feeling a bit naughty reading it back in the day. Picking up a copy today, “vanilla” is definitely the appropriate word.
I feel like this sums up everything I think/feel about this so well that an affirming academic nod and a simple utterance of “Good insight” as I walk away from your post-graduate presentation with body language that says I’m still in deep thought but I have a class to attend to is all I have to offer.
