How would that work? Modern is still relatively affordable for collecting and playing, so I don’t see a significant portion of people opting for fake cards over real ones.
The US government has to keep updating the currency to stop counterfeiting.
If they can counterfeit money look, feel, and even some of the security measures…you really don’t think if experts tried they could make an identical Pokemon card?
Technology can fight technology. Even if fakes continue to get better, the technology to distinguish the real cards from fake cards can also get better (IMO current technology should be able to distinguish the fakes of the future for many years to come).
It’s incredibly difficult if not impossible to create a PERFECT fake because no one could ever realistically ever replicate the exact printing conditions of the originals.
If fakes really do start to become a big problem in the future (meaning that it’s hard to distinguish real cards from fake cards in person with the naked eye; as of 2020 it’s still easy to distinguish real cards from fake cards with the naked eye) then grading companies will simply have to rely on technology to make certain that cards are genuine. I have no doubt that’s where we’re heading in the future regardless. The best companies will scan cards and a computer will confirm that a card is genuine.
What *will* become more difficult in the future is buying raw cards, because fakes will get harder and harder to distinguish with the naked (especially in pictures). So in the future we will likely be forced to rely on grading/authentication companies even more.
But we’re certainly not there yet, as even the best fakes are still easy to tell distinguish from real cards by people who know what to look for
Charlie has said CGC can basically x-ray the card to see every layer of the paper, so at least one company is definitely investing in the future (although they have used this tech for currency and comics for some time)
Look at sports. Card can go for millions of dollars, plenty of incentive, yet fakes are not a serious issue.
Yes grading companies would absolutely go through the motions to distinguish fakes, why wouldn’t they?
Regardless, the way I see it is if anyone has the resources and skills to replicate Pokémon cards to a worrying extent, I highly doubt they’d bother wasting their time with Pokémon cards.
