Normally, I’m not very opinionated and keep my opinions to myself but I’ll gently chime in here.
First off, besides 1st edition base holos, I’ve never sent in a card I didn’t think had a chance for a 10. All my 9s, and I have more than you’d believe, could have been 10s. I could have cracked and resent all of them back in and would have got tons of supposedly weak 10s back but in good conscience I couldn’t do that.
Cracking and resending at best is a morally questionable practice and at worse is deceitful and dishonest. If you believe an error was made then send it in for a review. If the card is deemed worthy of a 10 on review then you have a deserved 10…plus you keep the pop report accurate.
If your a buyer and you know that:
Seller A was a known cracker and was selling a PSA 10 for 100.00
And
Me, who only sent in 10 quality and never cracked my 9s hoping for upgrades selling for appx the same price
Who would you prefer buying that card from?
Absolutely a good idea, but some people would rather pay people in their own country due to the costs involved in using an overseas middleman where the service requires postage both ways.
That being said, I can’t see any problem with the staff here implementing a PayPal button that allows users to donate to the cause of keeping it running.
I half agree with you on this. I agree with you that cracking and resending is a morally questionable practice, and I struggled with whether I was going to do it myself or send in cards for review. Here are a couple reasons why I did it, hopefully it makes sense.
I didn’t want to pay the separate return shipping for a review service. Just for a few cards, $24 return shipping is exorbitant. Furthermore, on specials where there is a required number of cards, reviews don’t count towards that. Normally people don’t have 25 or 50+ cards to review.
I believe I asked someone awhile ago (probably you Gary) whether PSA, when reviewing cards, knows the previously assigned grade. Frankly I think if you look at any card you can find some sort of flaw. I don’t want PSA looking at my 9s and trying to figure out why they’re 9s. I think I’ll have a better chance at an impartial opinion via a raw card.
Isn’t a review almost the same thing as cracking the case? You can, theoretically, send in a 9-deserving card for review multiple times hoping for the same “mistake” so it gets a 10. That is, unless PSA keeps a record of review attempts which would totally undermine the impartiality thing…
A “mistake” in the grading process could happen any time, during the first time a card is submitted or the 10th. (I quote mistake because an opinion can never be inherently wrong, but no need to get into that conversation again) And that mistake can be a lower grade or a higher grade. Who’s to say my 9 isn’t a 10-deserving card that got stuck with a very harsh grader?
Of course, continuous cracking and resubmitting/reviewing has serious issues like you mentioned. If you don’t return the labels to PSA then you’re messing with the POP report, not to mention the shadiness of hoping for a weak 10.
Personally, I trust my own opinions. While I’d never profess to know more than PSA or any other serious collector, I have a very good idea of what card should grade what, especially in the 8-9-10 range. If a card comes back a 9 that after much personal review I can’t find anything wrong with, I’ll consider sending it in for a review or cracking it and resubmitting it. Which one I choose honestly just comes down to whether I feel comfortable cracking it out of the case and what type of special there is that month.
But if you say there all perfect and gem mint candidate, why not send the best ones for review. I have seen your mint 9’s… bought a bunch of them back in the day, and they were perfect… so erm, ide ddefinitely try and review them. I will destroy you if you dont, because i will be questioning your moral fibres towards 1st ed shadowless and shadowless… because They could be 10’s, and so you have punished them by not using the psa review service… YOu are a card punisher, and an execution must take place put forward by the Pokemon Card Court of Justice.
Years later…
You knowI havnt cracked a card out of a case unless it was to test if i could do it or not, and use it for a shake test.
I think the review service is the only option imo. Ide send it in 3 times, but i still havnt done so… Theres nothing wrong with the review service, but before there wasnt one, so I can understand why people crack em out in past, but there is no need to now… Edit: this just in… apparently the review service has been there all the long, but i thought it was a recent thing when xuzu sent in his mint 9 zard xD
I was definitely condidering to crack out a PSA 9 card and send to bgs fresh to remove any bias of it being a mint 9 and just being psa in general since they stated we consider psa to be less ect… but if it was a 10 i just wouldnt crack it out to send to bgs… It would go in for crossover as a 10.
