Ranking Card Eras (Favorite to Least Favorite)

How would you rank Pokemon card eras from your favorite to least favorite?

Mine may be a hot take but here:

ex
HGSS/Call of Legends
Neo WOTC
D&P/Arceus
Original WOTC
X&Y
e Series WOTC
Sun & Moon
Black & White
Sword & Shield
Scarlet & Violet

That’s my current sentiment, but I’m always changing my mind especially in the upper positions. Also I admit a lot of nostalgic bias lol

Neo WOTC and HGSS/Call of Legends are basically equal for me.

I feel like this would be a good time for a tier list

SV has to be number one. At least 17 special arts every set.

Zero stock art used for common/uncommon/rare cards.

Something like 40+ artists in each set all with various styles.

Personally I’d put VS as #1, but I agree with you on the order for the rest. Didn’t think I’d find someone with basically the same order I had except for 1.

That’s awesome!!! Glad to read that you agree with most of the list!!!
VS is an awesome series. It’s a great “successor” of Gym expansions. I recognize that it introduced some things such as the existence of “1st Edition”. Was a cool detail that a same illustrator illustrated all Pokémon related to a Gym leader. Despite all of this, VS is kinda low in my list because it was short-lived: only 1 expansion that focused more on Johto leaders than Kanto leaders. Was kinda rushed in that aspect. Would have been cool to see more development of Kanto leaders … And also mons of Red & Green (those 2 dudes who curiously don’t appear in VS).

Web is very high because despite being a reprint series, it actually brought back cards that I didn’t expect. For example, Unikarp or Masaki Gengar … And also because the card template is appealing to the human eye …

  1. PCG - cosmos, peak art/promos, second best card layout/aesthetic, delta species, gold stars, best exes

  2. PT - cosmos, best card aesthetic, best shinies, less stock art than DP

  3. ADV - cosmos, peak art/aesthetic, great set concepts/promos, but subpar exes

  4. SV - better card layout than previous two gens, best special art era so far

  5. DP - cosmos, best card aesthetic, but LV.Xs are a downgrade from exes, too much stock sugimori art in sets

  6. SWSH - second best special art era, but second worst card layout

  7. Vs/e - first great era of art, crystals, but yellow borders

  8. XY-BREAK/CP - special arts, average holo, good art scattered throughout, but with the rest of XY problems

  9. SM - (carried heavily by the last year) better special arts than XY, but worst card layout/SRs

  10. HGSS - cosmos, 3rd best card layout card layout thanks to the borders, some ok shinies, legends are interesting, art diminished by some of the direction and too goofy looking often, especially the primes

  11. Neo - better art than original era, but yellow borders and still limited art

  12. XY - basically just a continuation of BW with downgraded EXs/SRs, but better holo

  13. BW - EXs are ugly, shinies, but they’re all 5ban, bad holo, lots of stock art, but some ok art throughout

  14. Original - subpar art lacking diversity, yellow borders

I don’t know in what order I would list the sets, but I am curious to ask, what makes you consider one set better than another?

I look at the card list in a set. I use card arts, card style (ex. e series card layout is very unique but not my favorite style), rarities from that set (Shinings, LEGENDS, Gold Stars, etc.), and there is a nostalgia factor of what sets I grew up with. Generally, its the feeling I get when I scan through a set.
