I think this is the issue with Ditto transforming into any Pokemon yes. Once transformed you cannot tell which is the original Pokemon since Ditto can do a perfect copy.
There was one particular ditto in the anime that unfortunately could not get the faces correctly and would just look like lines. Regardless even a proper ditto would look exactly like Quagsire.
I realize now that this is a boring answer! So poke it with a stick maybe?
