As we all know we have the popular Is Beckett cooked? $$$ lawsuit thread, but I have a substantial value of cards in BGS and would love to know if there is any potential upside or crack my cards and send to CGC/PSA. Would love to hear opinions/thoughts about this volatile moment.
Modern buyers want something scarcer than PSA 10 Gem Mint to flex for clout. BGS Black Label and Pristine 10s have filled that niche. As long as social media is integrated into modern Pokemon card collecting, BGS will stay relevant.
At the end of the day, if Beckett is no longer grading new cards, your Beckett slabs will have the value of “buy the card, not the label”
If a raw mint price isn’t good enough, you can also grade at PSA or CGC later. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. But if you have the BGS slabs that carry a premium such as a modern 10 or a vintage 9.5, I’d dump it.
They tried that already. Perfect 10s were not widely accepted by the market. Maybe in a world where BGS doesn’t exist, their second attempt would be more successful. But knowing how CGC runs things and how people have reacted to them changing their grading scale/strictness several times in the past 5 years, I’m not sure that it would work out.
Without question they will be relevant in the future. As far as I’m aware their slabs are still commanding the highest value at the end of the day…
That isn’t even getting into the fact that they have a good and storied reputation in sports.
The billionaire fraudster owner and lawsuit doesn’t really have any bearing on them as a company other than its apparently making the budget really tight and therefore that affects everything else.
They’ll eventually end up being outright owned by another company that will most likely successfully keep the brand alive.
