Pokemon now holds the record for most expensive TCG card. Illustrator live auction is nearing 16 Million USD

The good old classic “You have some criticism, or simply aren’t hyped about the rich getting richer? You must be a poor loser full of envy”

What an idiotic way of reasoning

It appears that this is a clip from a 33 minute livestream for anybody interested:

There is no need for a temper tantrum full stop haha… especially when he’s basically just saying “I dont care about your opinion, you’re all broke and couldn’t afford to be a client of mine”

Do I think the sale was legit? Yes. Someone wanted to pay that much for it.

Were they silly to do so? Yes. Huge waste of money and ultimately were just buying airtime and flex credits. Same as Logan’s 1st Ed box break. Packs are not worth 40k now of other boxes.

Do I think Logan is shady af and that people are getting more upset about that side of it rather than the buyer of the card? Yes.

… And Ken totally missed that last point.

People are more questioning Logan and his past actions - eg. What happened with liquid and now this theory that he or an insider related to him had a bet that the card would go over x amount.

Ken is getting Goldin mixed up in a frequently called out scammer, just for a few $.

Personally I wouldn’t use goldin at all if I were to sell any of my nicer stuff because of this.

What’s the opposite of having a take on this? That’s where I am

That probably sounded cooler in your head than it actually reads lol

Anyway, it seems this is how he may have diddled the liquid “investors”. Always read the fine print.

Also, TPC should now just print these.

We’ve known this for months now, it was a scandal even before there was a sale.

Ah, well I haven’t really been keeping up with it.

UPDATE: It looks like he has since then took down the video from Instagram. I wonder why he wouldn’t want people to watch it lol

I will just say that it’s interesting how people supported comments in this thread saying basically the same thing Ken did, but with even more animosity towards poor people. It really explains why people get attacked and told they are collecting the wrong way if they aren’t psyched about numbers constantly going up and getting priced out/ having to pull back on collecting goals.

I’ve seen it in so many hobbies, and I ultimately have to conclude people who act/think like this are genuinely only “in the hobby” to flex their wealth on others.

If it’s remotely accessible to the dirty poors, it’s worthless to them.

They relish in the fact that they’re transforming something that the general public could once take part in into a walled garden for the rich kids and brocolliheads

bet all you pearl clutchers weren’t here when pokemon was worthless

Mucci said it is a $100,000,000 card if it’s legitimately the best card. He called out the rapid loss of dollar purchasing power and the need to sink free cash into appreciating assets. Him and Mr. Wonderful both want to assemble a living museum that doubles as an investment. I think the industry will continue to see higher prices for rarer items, and modern being flipped as a source of income for people who can never afford an illustrator. Room for both to coexist and continue to drive market madness.

Well he certainly doesn’t sound defensive at all!

I don’t think Ken said anything really disrespectful or that he hates poors, but it’s a bold/tough PR move to call out an unspoken truth - a large metric of the most miserable, vocal people in this hobby are never in the market to touch this card or any other Goldin weeklies to begin with. That said, they’re pressed and working overtime to cook up a viral media campaign narrative against the validity of the sale or how Ken/Goldin are somehow tainted by taking on the auction. There’s plenty of reasons that a lot of people dislike Logan and some of them are certainly valid, but Ken’s literally spotlighting pokemon to a larger demographic on a hit Netflix show while continuing to grow his platform and business in an extremely competitive market. There’s so many different auction houses competing for high end items and the two biggest things that gets them business are showcasing profitable high end sales and the ability to draw enough attention and exposure to an auction to draw in bidders before the time runs out. :man_shrugging:

I can see why he removed the video, there’s nothing he can say that will stop people from whining about the sale. TLDR - I don’t think the video was a tantrum or a meltdown. I think he was providing common sense answers to most of the conspiracies cycling online right now.

I really dont think Pokemon needs Ken Goldin to “spotlight it to a larger demographic”

Everyone knows about Pokemon, Ken’s show introduced zero people to the concept of a Pokemon card

I mean this is a bit of a clown take but you’re welcome to it. I guess I need to be a little more specific - while people certainly know what pokemon is, whether from the video game, cartoon, or card games, he’s drawn attention to it as a valued collectible asset, just as Logan did even though people dislike him. I’ll leave it at that and you can have final remarks since I’m a lot less invested.

I really don’t think what’s been said in this thread has been poor shaming at all. The point trying to be made is not “If you do not spend big $$$, you do not know anything about pokemon.” The point being made is “You can not have a fully informed and educated opinion on something unless you are fully 100% engaged in that something”

The only way to be fully 100% engaged, is to have skin in and experience transacting in the high end of pokemon. Otherwise, individuals that aren’t who are speaking in negative absolutes on this sale are offering nothing of value. Just negativity and hate for no reason.

Personally, I don’t care at all about this sale. It is what is to me. It’s a genuinely cool card that went for a crap ton of money. Yay! Lol

If everyone was aware then the story wouldn’t be featured in news outlets like the LA Times, CNN, IGN, Business Insider, etc. If it wasn’t news to people, it wouldn’t be in the news.

Most people are aware of Pokemon. However, the average person is still not privy to the value of trading cards, nor Pokemon trading cards. They might know 1st Ed. Base – that’s probably about it.

I don’t think this sale moves the needle as much as people think it will, and will primarily affect the top-end in all likelihood. People shouldn’t overreact to short-term market movements, but it will inevitably happen.

I understand people being upset with the trajectory of the hobby and its prices. I’ve been there, and it can be difficult to grapple with. With that said, I think the discourse around financial status is being blown out of proportion and betraying some people’s insecurities about themselves, their lives, or their collections. Ken probably should have said nothing, but he isn’t wrong that a lot of the criticism being levied is from people who have no business bidding in their auctions.

Even concerning the PSA 10 grade-- it’s not like it was changed from a 9 to a 10 or a 10 to a 9 mid-auction. Whether it’s deserving of the grade or not, people are free to bid as they wish. There’s nobody forcing them to click bid. Expecting someone (or a company) to forgo millions of dollars in a downgrade just so some nobody on the internet is happy is ludicrous.
