“4 major authenticators” is a term used loosely. Back to topic - wouldn’t surprise me if this dominance continues for awhile. With PSA grading all languages, languages like Simplified Chinese certainly adds to that volume.
97 out of the top 100 cards in total volume, huh. That’s something.
“ Once considered among the best and most popular card graders in the industry, Beckett has fallen to a distant fourth in submission volume, and now relies heavily on Pokémon.”
Grandpa still kicking, just slowly
Bgs relies on pokemon now? What’s happening to their sports and mtg?
That’s honestly quite bad news any way they wanna phrase it
charizardespana reply incoming.
Yeah there’s like no positive way to spin that
I would be thrilled to not see grey felt hat pikachu as a reference point ever again.
The only reasonable reply is “you’re right, they are struggling”
Which grading company is the fourth one anyway? I don’t see it being mentioned in the article. They mentioned Beckett is at fourth place, and PSA and CGC are 1 and 2, but who’s in third then? TAP perhaps? Did they really gain that much popularity already? Or maybe a non-Pokémon grading company, since the article website if for sports-collectibles?
Also, funny to read this in the article:
Bought one of those for my FA Supporter/CHR collection, since I don’t think it’ll come to English anytime soon if at all, and I was surprised it was still only ~16 bucks. But I guess with that many graded, it’s obvious the supply does outweigh the demand. Something you don’t see too often anymore for modern cards these days, unfortunately..

It’s SGC, which is quite large, but is a subsidiary of PSA since last year
Yeah it’s hard to fully characterize because it still exists as a brand but is owned by psa. It’s a bit like characterizing revenues from “Star Wars” franchise(s) separately from Disney. But Beckett is a FAR 4th
Ah ok. Didn’t knew SGC was still so large, but makes sense. You just almost never hear about them, but they’ve just been going slow and steady for little over two decades.

Considering the premium people put on PSA, why do people choose to grade with SGC?
The same reason people grade with cgc, cost. Also sgc is more established in sports. They have record sales, and have been around since the 90s.
At what point do PSA slabs replace cash in our world.
Correct me if I’m wrong as I’m not as knowledgeable about mtg but I thought that magic players don’t grade cards due to most of the hobby being based around competition
Thank you for your reply, I don’t know much about sports cards, and this fills me with more questions.
Does this mean that Collectors Universe has an effective monopoly on sports card grading?
Do PSA and SGC share grading standards, did the scale change when they were bought out?
Edit:
Contains similar verbiage to PSA, minus the pristine grade which is reserved for cards with 50/50 centering
CGC is becoming the preferred grader for MTG. PSA to some extent as well.
There is plenty of grading in MTG, but it’s limited to vintage cards, autographed cards, serialized cards, or meta-defining cards. There are groups of people that grade modern cards outside of promos, but I have no clue who the buyers would be.
Yes. They have an effective monopoly in sports. Also yes, their grading has gotten more PSA esque over the last year for tcg/non sports (they used to be MUCH looser). I have not seen any change in sports, but I only do vintage
