Pokémon 10-20 years?

…So, when the nostalgia reminds us of the friends that we’ve lost, more than the good times we had? :astonished:

Plato said Death was either a dreamless sleep, which might be really nice, and I have those regularly, OR existence without a need to eat, shave, or shower. Also not bad.

From what I see (interacted with gen Z-ers in game shops), history is repeating itself. Current gen Z-ers are like me when I was a kid in the 1990s, even gold Lugia Vstar card is top chase card for them.

Some of them didn’t even know what is Moonbreon or are seeing Moonbreon for the first time when I showed them my collection.

When they grow up to adulthood, they will continue to chase cards which were previously beyond their financial reach when they were a kid. The great circle of life continues and nature finds its ways…

You missed my point. The first test is when those who are nostalgic about the first cards are dead or collectively think of selling out for age-related reasons.

If people make the point that vintage is outdated etc. and that already kids of today don’t care about it, then it doesn’t bode well for those cards when their main demand base actually dies. Moonbreon might be new today, but by then it would be 30-40 years old. It won’t be amongst the first cards to find out if the Pokemon can make it into a mature collectible, but it will reach that point like everything else.

That’s why I think that art will matter more and more as time goes on - just being old and rare won’t cut it.

I don’t know. Comic books, baseball cards and magic the gathering have shown that vintage will always be at the top. Look at Action Comics #1. ABU Black Lotus and Topps 1952 Mantle rookie card. As the saying goes on here. The older, the rarer, the better

Not too familiar with comic books or baseball cards but from discussion here previously, I’d be surprised if Magic survives in 20 years.

Even if the game of magic dies out which I don’t think it will considering it’s been around for over 30 years. The ABU sets and expansion sets like Arabian nights will still be incredibly valuable

Agree very much with your last sentence.

Art is timeless.

  1. People moved on from Black Lotus already, it’s beyond reach of ordinary folks now - like “ousted”. Unless I win the megaball, I won’t even look at it.

  2. Older doesn’t mean more valuable. I know alot of things > 100 years old that are worth a few dollars only.

  3. Rarity doesn’t mean more valuable too. Lazy to dig out examples to show you but you get the drift…

People didnt grow with a ‘van Gogh’ painting or the ‘Mona Lisa’ they also didnt know about the batman or superman comics from 1938-1941, yet these are the most expensive comics out there. Its about the history and the story that comes with it. 1st edition base for example has the story and history behind it. Moonbreon is just a random card in a random set released in 2021, no story, no history, no rarity. I would be suprised if it ever will be more expensive than 1st edition base holos. Wait? It exactly already is. I rest my case.

Not compared to charizard 1st ed base or a shadowless charizard base

mass sell off will happen when the price goes up massively

couldn’t disagree more. Provenance matters. if there are pokemon collectors in the future. they will always want the earliest pikachu or charizard cards created.

That’s where you’re wrong. Moonbreon has a story, a cultural background, with scientific research:

That is why it clicks with so many people worldwide.

Moonbreon is exceedingly difficult to pull too. 1 in 3,000 packs! Coupled with the factory theft, the supply of Moonbreon in circulation is much lesser than planned, though the company said “pull rates are not affected”.

Just line sports collectors want the rookie mantle and comics collectors want the first books of the popular hero. Same with magic. Collectors want the first sets of power 9

So Moonbreon clicks because we once set foot on the moon and theres a moon pictured in the Umbreon card. Got it! buying everything with moon on it asap.

I don’t follow 1st ed base set holo prices, but if it’s already more expensive, how does that prove your point?

Why is it the focus is only on Pikachu and Charizard? How much do you think people care about Poliwrath and Clefairy?

I always find it a bit ironic when English base set aficionados claim their love of these cards is rooted in history.

Japanese base set no rarity cards are the very first set cards, and Japanese base set no rarity and unlimited cards are both older and rarer than the English versions. Historically speaking, they have more significance. If the vintage mantra of “older, rarer, minter” were true for base set, the Japanese originals should be more expensive than their English counterparts.

And yet, it’s the opposite that’s true. This is likely because more people (as of now) played with/remember these as their first cards, which demonstrates that it’s personal nostalgia - and not historical significance - that’s driving demand.

LoL

Not everyone wants the “rookie” card, for some pokemons, the earliest card is the ugliest.

By all means, collect what you like. Cant go wrong with that. Your username suggest you buy to invest. I just dont see the upside potential of this already really expensive moonbreon card. But that probably just me.
