I dislike the new prices but that means I have to make adjustments my collection goals. No matter the subject I never understood going out of your way to personally message someone vile things. If I dislike you or a situation why would I want to waste even more time on it? As @smpratte said there must be some real unhappiness in your life for you to put that much effort into it.
All artwork designs are affordable. Base set has so many remakes made throughout the years that are cheap. Unlimited is still affordable, base set 2 is super cheap, legendary collection etc. The reason why people are unhappy with current market prices I personally see two reasons. Finishing a set in a certain grade has now become very difficult which I mean that does suck but if you love the set that much just be patient or just go with the lower grade. The second is purly greed that is delivered and shown with jealous and childish comments. There is plenty to go around in this hobby. Those that are angry are angry for all the wrong reasons.
Honestly, people have been able to scoop up any cards they have been interested in at both accessible price points and with relatively low competition during two decades.
For whatever reason, those people apparently didn’t. It’s disappointing for them, but they can focus on different cards or find joy in their lives from other sources.
I think their outcries (which I haven’t witnessed) are likely stemming from a need to vent, but it’s unhealthily directed. Their expectations are too high and therein lays their conflict.
Many cards I’d love to own are now too expensive for my budget…but hey, that’s life. I’ll settle for a cheaper option or save up if there’s something I’ve gotta have.
I get the frustration, but not being able to afford a Pokemon card you don’t need to live is not worth getting angry over.
A lot of these new collectors are just lazy and lack any drive to find these cards though. I only rejoined the hobby a year ago and most of the cards I wanted were out of my price range. I just did what Z&G did and spent a lot of time looking for great deals on mint raw cards to hold for my collection or to grade to sell so I can get other things I initially wanted and it’s worked out beautifully
People have been swarming every deal recently due to price spikes, but even then I was still able to score a mint shadowless Raichu, mint base venusaur, and some mint jungle holos for cheap today because I kept looking. If you want to make progress in this hobby you need to put forth effort (or you could just be Bieber and buy whatever you want lol)
Also, the great thing about pokemon is that you can pretty much get any artwork that’s in English in Japanese in mint condition, and for much much cheaper(barring gold stars/crystals/shinings even though those are usually cheaper in Japanese still.) You’re really only priced out of this hobby if you choose to be
Prices are exploding across multiple collectible genres. It has nothing to do with Youtubers. Video games, comic books, sports cards, art, coins are all seeing record price increases. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Yes, if you hop onto Ebay you’d see that many collectibles have doubled and trippled during quarantine. I mean even a PSA 10 Upper Deck Griffey rookie has doubled in a month.
These people are under the assumption that there’s only a few hundred people in the pokemon market and a single person can “manipulate the market.”
I won’t name names but a bigger name on instagram was complaining about prices as well as blaming the biggest names in the community for the price increases. A few days later this person is asking new market value. It’s funny bc he’s complaining about prices but also selling at the new market value versus at a 50% discount.
Sports cards are going up. There was a thread here about an investor/venture capitalist (I’m not sure what he does lol) talking about investing in sports cards and how they are exploding. The vintage car auction site I’m registered sent metrics about how much growth there has been the last few months compared to previously. I’m sure there’s other reference points in different fields. It’s hard to tell how much of these increases will stick in the next 6,9,12 & 18 months.
Lots of jealous people who missed out getting cards before covid. Pokerev and others are great for the pokemon community cause they are bringing back vintage exposure which most of us grew up with. I just bought it slowly over time and it has paid out handsomely. Just look at some of jealous fools in the zard thread who were saying I was pumping when all I was looking for was help making a decision.
When I came back to the docks of Pokemon cards I figured the ship had already sailed but surprisingly there was still a nice spot on the SS Anne for me to hop on after catching the hidden Mew. I gladly took my spot and have been enjoying the ride. There has been a few waves but I wouldn’t replace the experience for anything in the world
I believe at the moment with the current worldwide situation a lot of people are experiencing unhappiness, many of the things that people normally do to enjoy life are not possible right now.
During difficult times often people look to the things that used to bring them happiness, for example Pokemon card collecting. I know quite a few people have mentioned on here that collecting has helped them during tough times in their lives.
I feel that people have sought some enjoyment and happiness during this time from trying to complete their collection goals and because of the new spike in prices perhaps this is no longer possible. This can trigger emotions which aren’t necessary rational and are out of context given the current pandemic. I think it puts a lot of adults into their ‘Child Ego State’.
I will be completely honest and put myself out here a bit. I have experienced some of these emotions. Have I been angry at the prices? No. Have I sent spiteful messages to other members of the community, of course not! (and I definitely don’t condone that) But I have felt a bit frustrated and perhaps a little sad that maybe I will not be able to complete some of my collection goals. Yes its illogical, and yes it is possible to change or adjust the goal posts, of course! But emotions are not logical. I would be surprised if there isn’t at least a few other people on this forum that feels a little bit the same way.
At the end of the day we are all human and we should all be kinder to each other and ourselves.
Nice post.
I’ve found the huge majority of us but, sell, and/or trade. Those things kind of level the field whether values are up, down, or somewhere in between.
When I was a kid everyone was mad that 1st edition Charizard was $100 plus at the local Anex. Now that would be a steal but at the time there was plenty of unhappy people. It is what it is. Today’s high price is cheap as hell a decade plus from now
