New Reprint of 151 - Price discussion

There’s some hope. Clearly some critical thinking occurs in the modern sealed collectors mind

for jp 151 they prob will. there are better things to hoard imo i will prolly dump the ones i have on stockx if the price spikes again.

What do you speculate is better to hoard? I like JP 151 for the masterball holos, extra incentive to crack it could mean accelerated shrinkage as people try to complete their master sets.

I think shiny treasure is currently undervalued, would like to buy in there as well

When there’s more negative sentiment about the price outlook of certain products, I always remind myself about the Rudy bathroom situation. In a more stable market where free tendies are all but gone, it’s far more difficult to conceptualise the true potential of the market. Outlooks tend to be conservative at best, or bearish at worst, which is what I can see in Pokebeast’s sentiments. When the market is on the up, the general commentary is the complete opposite - “wow, how high can this go??”, “the sky’s the limit for 151!”, “We’re at 3x now but I reckon 10x in 6 months!”.

In other words, most people’s opinions are reactive rather than proactive. I know he had very strong foundations beforehand, but the Pokemon bathroom situation really seemed to solidify Rudy’s philosophy of being dedicated to a proactive outlook on the markets. When you take away all the noise about print volumes, and the idea that more people than ever are doing the same thing, you’re just left with the notion that things will take longer to reach loftier price levels. I think many people realise this, whether consciously or subconsciously, but that is the thing that worries them the most. And most people cannot handle the wait. The atmosphere of quick, free returns during Covid ruined many people’s perception of what it means to make an investment. When all’s said and done, this situation like all those before it really just boils down to the classic bulls v bears scenario. And, in financial markets particularly, history does tend to repeat itself.

I think thats a fair analysis
with 151 whats unique is that your banking on more ppl returning to the hobby as opposed to standard organic growth of children joining the hobby fresh as it’s intended as a nostalgic set, and that has me also thinking about limited growth.
Children will be playing the new games with the new starters and grow into Pokemon with a completely different set of characters in mind

At the same time it does have many big alt art cards… and everyone knows blastoise and Charizard. I do think this will make money, but I have a long time horizon on this set appreciating in a significant way. It wouldn’t surprise me if they did more reprints in 2025

As someone who grew up with Kanto. I actually enjoyed Evolutions and that set along with Pokemon Go actually brought me back into the hobby.

I dont think that 151 quite had the pull of getting older collectors back into the hobby that Evolutions did, but 151 is a nice “modernized”(especially art) version of Kanto.

I think what you may not also be considering is all the sealed product that is being opened. You mention about needing more people to return to the hobby…but once the printer is finally turned off, then the quantity of sealed boxes only can go down. Sure, if the print run is larger than usual, it may take longer time to reach “x” price. The “longer time” part is where I think your point is…saying the opportunity cost of tying up capital now isnt worth the potential future returns?

They restocked 151 at Pokémon Centers across Japan again, this time increasing the purchase limit [from 10 packs previously]

location cited: Mito branch
20 pack limit

location cited: Ota branch
20 pack limit

location cited: Okinawa
5 box limit

location cited: Tokyo Skytree
40 pack limit

Whoever fell for the reseller price increases should look forward to more reprints, especially when other regular sets are at 5 box purchase limits

Hopefully they do more boxes too! Crazy how much theyre printing of this and its still not enough

I’m guessing TPC’s goal is to eventually reach a sustainable rate of 5 boxes per customer in person and 20 packs [1 box’s worth] online for 151. It depends on how comfortable they are with distribution at certain places. Once they get to a printing capacity that matches current demand for 151, they will lift more purchase restrictions. Worlds is finished so the September-November period should see a lot of reprints flooding in, and with every other set slowing down they need only focus on the sets that repeatedly sell out (e.g. Triplet Beat, Clay Burst)
