So im looking into buying a few cards in the set as I have fallen in love with the artwork. Anyone know why these cards are so rare to pick up in 10 1st ed? I was lucky enough to find an Umbreon at a decent price but some of the other really nice cards seem to be non existant in 10
Looking at the pop report the 10 ratio isn’t terrible, it just looks like quite a low graded total overall. Maybe a mix of low grading interest and slightly lower quality.
If you look at jungle you have kangaskhan which had only 8 out of 118 graded come back as 10’s. About 7%. This was the lowest percentage for jungle, but most of them vary between 15-25% 10’s out of what was graded.
Discovery seems to have 15-35% overall 10s but with lower graded overall as well. Some cards such as Houndour have only had 39 graded but with 7 10s. Then magnemite is 22/36 10s which is surprisingly high. I wonder if sheet location has anything to do with the portion of 10s graded?
I think I’ll put together a guide some day on trying to quantify how hard to grade each set is depending on their 8/9/10 ratio. Obviously things like how the person handles the cards can only make them go down, but it should still give a general sense as many cards that are graded are pack fresh and all cards can be assumed to be handled similarly before being sent to grading.
I like the idea of this analysis. I’d guess an hour or so to build the spreadsheet. Then whatever numbers you want to gather. This kind of stuff gets me excited. Pull through for us.
I do believe quality had something to do with it. In general as well tho Im not too sure how long the print runs were for these sets in 1st ed. Probably near the end of the Wizards of the Coast Era too which may have shortened it
I’ll deliver in the next week or two with a start at least. Will start with the first several sets then add more as time allows. It will be interesting. I have been wanting to do something along these lines for a while, but now that I said it I will be more likely to go and actually do it. As you said harvesting the raw data will be quick, it will be deciding what to do with it and how to display it that will take the time. Also updating as the pop reports are not static obviously.
There are definitely special considerations to take for certain sets such as base set 1st having such high value overall it has a huge tail off to the low end of grades, more so than sets not worth as much. As nobody will be grading too many PSA 1-7 cards from later sets, but charizard, blastoise, venusaur 1st editions are some of the few cards that have reasonable value along the whole spectrum leading to more overall grading of lower condition cards. Also the timing of when the came out and the fact that many have sat many years before being graded. I want to think of the best way to separate these factors to get more a set printing quality, but also find different things we can do with the expanded data of a set such as this.
Took my lunch break to start putting something together just to throw out here for initial feedback and see if anyone had any comments or anything. This is very basic just getting the relevant info together for base set and jungle. All set variants and holo cards only grades 8-10. I think lower grades are typically graded for personal reasons only sentimental value of older collections. I am more looking to analyze the higher collectible grades and help shed a little light possibly on each sets “print quality”.
It is more of a pain than I realized it would be as you can’t really copy/paste easily from the PSA pop report unless anyone has info on how to do that. That would be appreciated. The way they have three sub-rows in the grade rows (for qualifiers and “+” or half grades) makes it copy into excel poorly and not properly bring all the data. Tried pasting it several ways but no luck.
I plan to add more sets before I post over in the guide section, probably starting with all WOTC initially and make it more visually appealing and add some more in depth info/analysis. I have a few ideas with where I want to go with it, but feel free to add ideas/suggestions. Should be able to get it together in a few weeks. Maybe add ex’s, primes. legends, full arts and such down the line if there is interest. Also if anyone has any idea on how updating could be automated? I don’t know if it is possible to have the numbers pulled from PSA’s website every time you open the sheet? That is over my head technical wise but I will look into it as that would be awesome.
Across all three variants Charizard is very hard to grade as a 10, one of the hardest for each set. Lot’s of people trying and low success rate. I mean look at unlimited 5.4%. Some of this can be due to ones that were 10s out of the pack getting more handling than other holos due to more trading or something, which brought them to 8-9 but it is hard to say.
Charizard is the most valuable due to simple supply and demand. Higher supply but near insatiable demand. 2-3x more common than the others in 10, but about 5-10x the price because there is just that much demand.
Didn’t mean to derail @mtlballer100. Are you looking to buy any certain neo disovery 10s? What prices are you willing to pay? I may be able to flush out some mint copies if there is a decent market for them.
Yeah Charizard’s demand is absolutely absurd. Ive noticed the blastoise has spiked considerably lately as well tho, with Venusaur trailing a distant 3rd as usual. To be honest im not sure what range Id look for, I paid 250 recently for a 10 Umbreon 1st ed I thought that was a pretty good price. I really like that ratio analysis tho, I figured zapdos was the highest as it always pops up on Ebay in 10
