Munch promos - worth it at current price point?

It’s looking like at the current moment, a full raw MP-LP set of Munch promos will run you 10k (or more) at the current low lists on ebay. What do you all think of the current price and if it will ever go down again?

Not worth

$200 got you the full set years ago. Its not worth it at 10k

Being “worth it” is pretty subjective to your own personal circumstances.

I think they are really incredible cards - immediately recognizable art that ties to historical paintings… imo they probably have a good price stability.

However, not rare, moderately played, “mass produced” 8 year old promos is not where I’d spend $10000!

I wouldn’t spend 4 figures on MP/LP cards let alone 5.

Amazing cards, but not worth it at current prices.

I think there’s a time and place for this argument, like that applies to 90% of cards but isn’t true for all 90% - imo.

Postcard sets are less than $500 :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

As others have drawn out, if you want the artwork and don’t want to pay crazy prices, get the post cards.

If you want to collect the card for later appreciation me, get the cards as high of a grade as possible.

These will continue to climb quote me on it. Not a hot take, these will become one of the sets people think of when they think “Japanese exclusive set”

Too many people on this forum have damning price memory. Price Memory is great to reflect with an open mind of the past, but we are in a new era of collecting cardboard. Where one of the most printed cards in a PSA 10 sells for almost 3K.

If anyone wants to come into this hobby and throw some money at something that is a solid long term hold, this Munch set would be it.

Outside of money growth, if you want the cards the best time to have bought them were 10 years ago. The second best time is today.

(For my bias, I have no munch cards to sell you. I am a mere collector that has seen this cycle happen time and time again. Just wanted to lay it bare)

I payed 550 for a full set in 10 years ago, that was over marked at the time. They are all sold now because the pricepoint now makes no sense. Belive me I loved my munch promos and ponchos, but when I could get them at 20-40 it was fun, at 10k not so much

this isn’t answering your question at all but i’d never seen all of them next to each other so i never fully processed that they are each spooking the next one in line, with the haunter catalyst of course. this is delightful, thanks for this post

What should I buy?

Is this an investment decision?

Buy them if you like them. They’re really cool.

I’ve recently sold all my PSA 10s and bought lower grades, simply because people value 10s more than I do.

I get that most cool cards ended up that way - “should have bought 8 years ago”

But some stuff, the boat has shipped sail. Find something else similar. For example, another art collaboration like Van Gogh Pikachu was “cheap” for awhile not too long ago

When I bought my Eevee (200ish) you could pick up the whole set for ~1100. I can’t imagine 10xing that but :man_shrugging:t2:

I think this promo set is one of the “gold star” sets. Japanese exclusive, great fundamentals , oG illustrators and unique concept. It is really S Tier. It will only grow in value. If you did not get them early. You will not get them cheap. Value will only climb. Doesn’t matter how many copies exist. Supply and demand. Demand will always be higher than the available cards

These also fall in that card show/vendor sweet spot for dealers. Like they’re rare enough that not every dealer has them, but common enough that most people know what they are.

I personally love the art…Like @Slade mentioned with todays market…would I rather spend 3K for a PSA 10 Ascended Heroes Gengar? or 3K on a raw Munch Psyduck, Eevee and Rowlet? I’d personally choose the Munch

wouldnt pay anything close to 10k for something with over 1000 pop

or you can buy something like low pop wotc, whose pop will never meaningfully increase even with whatnot bros opening all the boxes coz psa will just hit them with an 8 on all the “pack fresh” holos

For $10k, there are literally hundreds of cards that I would purchase first before a set of moderately played Munch promos. But that is a reflection of my preferences, and you should get what you like.
