Mtg original artwork

Anyone know of any good resources in buying original mtg artwork? I joined a few Facebook groups. I’m most interested in artwork around the time of tempest, mirage. I know prices can vary depending on the popularity and artist, but roughly what is the going rate of original pieces?

afaik the biggest marketplace for MTG original artwork is this one: www.facebook.com/groups/mtgartmarket

Usually most paintings are auctioned off, but since there’s a big competition most go for at least $xxxx

If you are talking about final used pieces, they go at least for around 1,5k, most significantly higher than that. A basic land for example easily goes for 4k+, some recognizable pieces and species (angels…) are often times in low-mid 5 figures.

If you are on a budget, you might look into preliminary pieces that were used in the creation process of a final piece (color studies, sketches etc)

@ash already mentioned the number one source, basically every mtg art collector is in there.

Here is a piece of mine that you might enjoy since it´s from the mirage-visions era

Shadowless basically covered it! You can definitely pick up some of the less desirable originals for less than $1.5k, though. Most pieces are going to be in the $1500 to $4k range. I own a few pieces of original art myself. Here’s my favorite:

The only remotely playable card from the Rhystic cycle from Prophecy. Besides that pesky Study…

Beautiful piece @zorloth ! I want to add that you will have to look very hard to find a final piece under 1.5k, it´s possible but they are very few and far between - and often times with curious artworks…

Thanks guys for the info. I will check that out.

Forgot to mention: Dustin Ochoa (prominent and reputable member of the MTG original art community) has a site where he has some art for sale. He has some decent pieces up, and the prices are actually pretty reasonable. Definitely worth checking out.

Kind of tempted by Order Of Whiteclay; really love Lorwyn-era Kithkin art, and it’s actually a pretty decent card, too.

On that note, there´s also a new site created by Jerry and Phil: www.darigaaz.com/ it still needs to get more inventory though.

@zorloth the harrier is also a nice piece, played that as one off in martyr proc legacy

That card was the nuts in limited either way…

And wow, they have some nice pieces up on there. Echoing Decay and Psychotic Fury are both vaguely playable lol. And Johtull Wurm is super cool. Their asking prices are a bit crazy, though.

*was a thing haha (not entirely sure if you could still pull it off as I´m not in touch with the current meta) - played that in 2014 with serras ascendant, karakas etc - was very good against meta decks like sneak show etc. Was never T1 of course, but was competitive in the right meta.

Harrier is kind of funny tech against sneak n show lol. That’s pretty mean. Never seen anyone play that deck in Legacy; kind of tough to justify over DnT. Sounds fun, though!

@zorloth it was basically a DnT with martyr proc included, deck list was something like:

4x Martyr
4x Ascendant
4x Sfm
4x MoR
4x Thalia
1x Harrier
2x cannonists
4x Vial
1x Batterskull
1x SoFaI
1x Jitte
4x Swords
a few viable slots (proclamation, mass removal etc)
22-24 lands (including Rishadan/Wasteland)

Sorry to bump this thread, but I didn’t want to make a new thread just for this. But did you guys see what Storage Matrix sold for?

$3500. WTF. Wayyyyyy undersold, IMO. Amazing, highly thematic Urza’s block art. And it’s actually a reasonably popular card in casual EDH. Really sad that I missed the auction for it.
