Making cards more rare

Right now, no change is needed.
Completing sets is already near impossible for modern Pokemon.
People who want the artificial rarity can always pay 10k for a black label…

They need to save the serialized ‘bullet’ for lesser times.
Like magic did last year with the 1 of 1 ring card to hype things up again.

I don’t really love how artificially exclusive the hobby already is, don’t see a need for further artificial rarity

Pokemon is good at purposeful rarity. The story of a cards release + the artwork is the magic combination. Trophy cards just happens to be rare, and even in that category, I don’t care for most of the new trophies as the art is unappealing to me.

Also, I don’t believe that people don’t care about rarity at all. No one is rushing to collect the c/u/r modern cards in sets. There isn’t a master list of them, because there is 0 challenge. You need a balance, but serialized cards are manufactured rarity. With that said, I think the pokemon market is so large there isn’t one general consensus. I’m sure serialized cards would align themselves with black labels and that whole vibe.

all of those sound like artificial ways to increase the rarity, esp serialized crap. the real way to increase the rarity is to increase the demand for it.

So for those who do appreciate the art of cards. How would you feel about a subset with artist signatures?

WoTC did something like this with MTG. Certain packs came with Art Cards, and occasionally these art cards were stamped with a gold signature. The idea was pretty cool, but they have no real value or desirability.

Maybe it would be different if the signatures were live vs. stamped, but I doubt it. Artists commissioned by WoTC have incredible freedom when it comes to signing, so signatures don’t add much value unless you are talking about someone highly revered, someone who rarely signs, or someone who died.

I imagine that Pokemon might react differently to these types of cards, especially if the signature was live.

Below are some examples.

As a pokemon lover I agree with the thread, but as a species collector I am conflicted.

I imagine this is a discussion that Hasbro had before including ‘one-of’ cards in the MtG crossover sets…

“Let’s include a card that makes everyone buy and buy to hunt it down”

“But what happens when someone finally finds it?”

“Serialized?”

MtG has signed art cards (cards that are just there for the atwork and signature, but no playability. They were a gimmick that just added something for collectors, but never got much traction. I’m not sure if they’re even printed for the recent sets anymore…

edit, Dyll beat me to it. oops

This is a cool idea. IDK how it would translate to weighing packs and such, but it would be neat (though it could be REALLY annoying too, in a tournament setting) to have monster cries when you cast them.

I like that idea. But would like for them to be real signatures. I think it would add something to the cards. I don’t know. Or Japanese signatures for Japanese cards

Look at the Voltorb Professor Program Promos. Basically a modern day trophy of sorts with how few copies they gave out. Collectors for english 151 are paying 1k for that card now.

Seriel numbered cards are so unnecessary and extra.

The symmetry of this Blue Eyes reminds me of what could’ve been between these Charizards.

I’m in favor of making an “impossibly rare” tier. Maybe 1 single card in high class sets but this ideally is an extra card that they spend more time with. make it numbered would be even better. like 1 of 250, ext
I’m sure I’m in the deep minority here as most ppl I expect will say something along the lines of “make the card available to as many ppl as possible to enjoy the artwork”

i want it specifically to be a set card, as I think the chase is synonymous with ripping and the excitement of being able to pull the card at random is perhaps the most thrilling aspect of ripping
ideally this wouldnt be something as part of every set but instead rolled out strategically
it would bring a lot of buzz to pokemon when these cards are discovered

like in the new gym challenge set they are about to release, if they had a specially numbered “Ash’s Pikachu” with unique artwork as an incredibly rare pull, that would really light a fire under the entire tcg

When TPCI is on their last legs, you will see serialized cards in sets just like MTG and sports cards resorted to before them.

Obviously thats going to be the time for investors to make some real money from the hobby.

I mean… Anyone who thinks a 1st ed base Charizard will be worth more than the first serialized 1/1 Charizard with the original Arita artwork will be sad to meet reality.
