Lugia rookie only 2nd to Charizard

I love Feraligatr as well… when those Japanese NEO folder files hit the market with the 3 starter evolutions … that feraligtr was brilliant… That shade of blue…

I don’t dispute that Lugia was the most popular Pokemon of Gen 2 (mostly because of the movie). I also fell in love with that Pokemon and its presence on the box cover of Silver was the main reason I chose that game over Gold. It’s just that I have seen plenty of people trying to draw parallels between Charizard and card xyz as ‘the next Charizard’. And every time it happens, that card receives a huge hype and rises in value immensely within a very short period of time (see LOB Blue-Eyes). The thing is; if a card sits at a certain price range for ages and then rises so hard, not because of its history but only because people suddenly think it’s a base set Charizard analogon, it sort of undermines the card’s identity itself, and it looks artificial to me. To me, Lugia is Lugia, and Charizard is Charizard.

Yeah, it was just so iconic. Plus the fact that I loved and used Feraligatr pretty much every playthrough of generation 2 games further endeared it to me. Feraligatr is definitely in my top 5 favorite Pokémon of all-time!

I totally agree with you that Charizard and Lugia hold separate identities of their own.

I’m mainly comparing their significance to their specific generations both in game and tcg. Not saying we should overhype Lugia as it is by no means on Charizard’s level and for that matter no card is, so we are in complete agreement there.

Fact.

reasons why?

Carbon has 12 protons. The speed of light is 299792458 m/s. AUG is the mRNA start codon. Rayquaza goldstar is the second greatest set card. 17 is a prime number

Facts are facts!

Does anyone think the growth in PSA 9 1st ed Lugia is sustainable?

I think the two biggest contenders are the Lugia you mentioned and t17. In my opinion it’s between lugia and typhlosion for being king of 2nd Gen cards. I have looked at many polls for most popular Pokémon and typhlosion is always ranked VERY high. And from what I can gather it’s the 2nd most popular starter. So I would rank it like this

  1. Charizard 2. Typhlosion 3. Lugia.

But Latias is a cooler Pokemon and is harder to grade and is literally gold :thinking::thinking:

will it keep increasing at this rate forever? No. Will it return to prices with had a few months ago? Maybe, but I doubt it will get that low.

But you’re forgetting the fact that T17 is ugly :grimacing:

Lugia and T18 are objectively cooler cards :sunglasses::sunglasses:

100% I could see it being a $10,000 card. It’s legendary and a hard grade. Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, Mewtwo, Lugia. That’s what I see being unobtainable in 5 years. Other base cards will be super high… but your legendary early cards with iconic Pokemon are the ones listed. Just my thoughts! I want to say Dragonite rookie… but it’s not on the same level.

I mean I think it just depends. I could definitely be swayed into agreeing, though. A lot of people had their start in Gen 1. I would guess most people who are in the card collecting hobby today. It’s where the delicious nostalgia juices come from. But a lot of people got their start in Gen 2, so their nostalgia comes (primarily) from the mascots of those games.

I personally love the Lugia artwork and until the price blew up on PSA 10 it was my dream chase card. But I also got my start in Gen 2 because I’m a dumb little baby zoomer. I personally don’t have nearly as much of a connection to Gen 1 as I do to Gen 2.

Overall I think it’s a massively special card for a lot of reasons. Lugia was also a massive character in the movie. The card rocks. I think it’s going to stay behind cards like Base Blastoise, but I truly wouldn’t be surprised if I’m wrong. The set itself is so special because it’s **NEO**, ya know? It’s new! I’m sure it felt like a completely new thing to a lot of you old boomers who were around and conscious when it dropped. I’m sure that feeling alone gave the set/card a lot of hype.

The english release of NEO only came a year after 1st edition base set. So everyone that collected base set pretty much was in it when NEO dropped. So the nostalgia is real. It came at the peak of popularity I’d say. I feel all the stars aligned for this card to be in the top 3-4 set cards of all time.

Yeah the rate is not going to keep this pace but curious to see if it does fall, how far.

if you adjust for population, it’ll probably look something like 1. zard, 2. blastoise, 3. lugia

if typhlosion was pop 40, would it be at the same price as lugia? doubtful as meganium and feraligatr at pop 18 are ~4k+ cards

I’ll defend big toad boi again. PSA 10 Venusaur is selling for over $4k with a pop of 132. If it was pop 40 I think the price would have Lugia well beat.

If pokemon was reality if you compare Charizard to lugia then Lugia would win hands down every single time no matter what without breaking a sweat. Hes the god of the sea, compared to a general fire breathing dragon that dies when his tail fire goes out.

Now in comparison in fan favorite it’s debatable and really they shouldn’t be compared. Charizard is Charizard and is a iconic pokemon. Lugia is lugia. Two different pokemon with two different skill sets that make them iconic.

In comparison to the TCG there is nothing that trumps base Charizard as far as value and being the center of the hobby(yes there are trophies but let’s keep this about the TCG that we grew up with. Tophies fall into their own category.). Is lugia rookie second in the hobby? Depends in what context. For childhood nastalgia yes for value no (at least for now since things can always change in this hobby). When we look at gen 1 it’s always been Charizard as the head honcho. The legendaries are iconic and the other two starters memorable but we all know that most people start the game with Charmander so they can get that iconic fire breathing dragon.

Gen 2 it was all about lugia. If you look at sales history numbers reflect that people valued silver version over gold with over 100 thousand more copies sold. Typhlosion was the popular choice of starters but the story of lugia is what stole the show for the game. The movie only added towards increased interest.
