The “Bad guys” weren’t marketable back then. History however has shown us the contrary now,

hey all!

I know this is a super old thread but I’ve been struggling to find any information on the Italian version of these skateboards. The ones in Italy were released by “Giochi Preziosi” and seem to feature some different Pokemon, as well as different designs of some (but not all) of the same Pokemon used on the X-Concepts boards.

For instance, Nidoran M has a board by Giochi Preziosi, but not one by X-Concepts, Poliwhirl has a board by both brands but use different poses, and Pikachu has the exact same board and pose with both brands. The packaging is also almost identical, which makes the think it was a re-distribution, but the existence of brand new boards is making me think otherwise.

What do you all think? A re-distribution with additional and new Pokemon/poses? Or a brand new, totally unrelated release?

Yours is a very interesting question, personally - and based on nothing - I think these are separate productions.

I don’t think there was an agreement between x-concept and giochi preziosi, but rather that it was an autonomous re-proposal (the Italian one).

I base this statement on the fact that one of the two Italian releases also has a screwdriver to unscrew the truck. While a second Italian release (probably the most common) also has a sort of hook to adjust it as a keychain, as if they wanted to overdo it to stay different (with limited success).

Maybe with the fact that there were two distributions they could have covered the x-concept ones and added, or (more likely) they made a few to see how it went. It probably went badly and they sweetened it with a re-release, but I don’t know how well it sold either. I can’t tell how much arts did they print and if they even covered every x-concept art… Let alone making a variant for everyone.

They also reprinted some with the same artwork in both packaging variants, here’s the other pikachu and meowth.

Summary

To be fair I was today years old when I discovered that there were differences between the Italian and English versions, it’s thanks to your post that I’ve dig into it for a moment, so… take everything with a grain of salt.
Let’s see if someone more expert shows up

If anyone has a snorlax open or sealed please dm me!!

@omic Thanks so much for the reply, especially on such an old post haha

Fascinating stuff! I hadn’t even considered a re-proposal by the Italian brand. I would imagine they didn’t sell super well, at least in the US. I remember tech decks being super popular back in the day, but I never saw a single kid with these Pokémon-themed ones (otherwise I would have tried to beg my parents to get one for myself lol)

The packaging of both the US and Italian ones look super similar for sure, but I suppose there’s only so many ways to package a mini-skateboard. I just find it interesting that some Pokémon got a release in one region but not the other.

Thanks again

It’s something I like myself but didn’t really take the time to dig enough yet

They were a niche thing here but I was in that niche, I still have some fingerboard from like… 16(?) years ago, somewhere.

Me neither in Italy! I May have some foggy remembrances from a Toy store, but never saw One opened in person.
One thing May be that tech deck where a thing almost 10 years later, here, when Pokémon were not for cool Kids anymore
