Thank you so much for doing that, that’s awesome! Bit sad that there isn’t anymore cards with tropius in the background. But anyway, I had some questions about the Japanese decks. I think your right with the Japanese Movie Commemoration VS Pack 003/019 that there was no 1st edition for this. I also can’t find any Japanese Torterra Battle Starter Deck 001/010 in 1st edition, I’m only able to find it in UED. With the Japanese Steelix Constructed Standard Deck 004/019 I can only find it in 1st edition and can’t seem to find any UED which is weird I would’ve thought if it has 1st ed it has UED aswell. I was wondering if you saw these variants anywhere?
Thanks again @quuador,
You’re indeed right. This one is also only in UED. I collect Pikachus myself, and knew the Raichu Half Deck of these four Decks including your Torterra Battle Starter Deck were released in UED. I accidentally confused it with four other decks however which are also for Torterra, Infernape, Empoleon, and Raichu. These four decks were released in UED as set of four, but also had a 1st edition release with just the three Starter Pokémon themed Deck (so excluding Raichu). As a Pikachu collector I know both the Pikachus in the DP-logo decks and B-logo decks are only available as unlimited edition. But you’re right that the B-logo decks are only available in UED in general. I confused your Torterra deck with this DP-logo Torterra deck, which I do know is available in 1st edition.
My bad, thanks for the correction!
Too be honest, this one I’m doubting about as well. This deck has the black L2 logo, similar as the Japanese Reviving Legends set (white L2 logo). The Japanese L2 and L3 sets from the HeartGold SoulSilver era do exist in unlimited edition, but are very hard to find! I once bought a bulk with about 7,000 Japanese cards, of which about 300 were L2 and L3 (and also about 500 L1 cards). Of these 300 L2 and L3 cards, less than 15 were in unlimited edition. The unlimited edition L2 and L3 sets were very short-printed, but do exist. All 500 L1 were only 1st edition however, so these don’t exist in unlimited edition as far as I know.
As for this deck, I honestly don’t know. All I know is that the unlimited edition set around this era in time do exist (mostly; L1 excluded), but are very short-printed and hard to find. I just (perhaps falsely) assumed this L2 deck also exists in a very short-printed unlimited edition variation. I forgot to add the “I’m not sure”, so will add that to it.
This one is one of those cases of “Exists till proven otherwise”, which is always a very annoying concept… How do you prove something doesn’t exist… It’s also a sentence used for those who believe in aliens and ghosts and such…
Truly amazing work you’ve done here, @quuador, the community can’t thank you enough. I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on which resources you use in the process of compiling your exhaustive lists. I’m currently looking into making a list containing all the cards that feature Imakuni? in the artwork. So for I’ve only been able to track down 14 cards in total for Japanese and English combined although the emphasis definitely lies on the former. Any and all help would be very welcome.
For these Pokémon specific lists I usually do the following:
I go to the Bulbapedia TCG page, i.e. Cosmog TCG. Then I open each individual link in the card column and look at the release information for all English and Japanese variations of a card.
I then go to the Bulbapedia Error Cards page and Ctrl+F for the Pokémon to see if there are any errors (which also have a corrected version available).
Then I go to the Jumbo Cards page and Unnumbered Japanese Cards page and Ctrl+F there as well.
And in between (one set at a time) I also add all foreign cards. I usually look at en.pokemoncardmarket.eu at the specific cards, or the cards from the same set, and see if there are any cards in French/German/Italian/Spanish/Portuguese for sale. Based on older lists (especially my own collections) I know for most of the sets in which languages they are released by now.
For Korean cards I then first search for the Pokémon + KTCG on Bulbapedia (i.e. Cosmog KTCG), and open each indiviaul link and Ctrl+F again. Sometimes I also look on eBay if I can find any singles for that Pokémon, although that usually only works with popular Pokémon like Venusaur or Charizard, since there aren’t a lot of Korean cards for sale usually. Searching for the Japanese set name + korean as search term sometimes gives me Korean products as search results that aren’t mentioned on Bulbapedia (I think only the Korean-exclusive sets are mentioned on Bulbapedia, not the ones that are the same as their Japanese counterparts).
And then the list is done, and I put it in my google drive and link it to the collector that requested it.
As for what you state, all cards with Imakuni? in the artwork, that’s a bit tougher. If I search for Pokémon in an artwork I usually use this list I once created and check each artwork individually for the Pokémon. And I usually look at all trainer cards in my own 7,000+ card collection.
But here are the English and Japanese cards with Imakuni? in the artwork I could find just now (17 in total):
Imakuni?'s Doduo and Imakuni?'s Doduo: two Japanese variations (original Glossy promo and CP6 reprint); one English variations (XY Evolution non-Holo Secret Rare)
That’s a very tedious and refined process. Thanks a lot for sharing. Imakuni? will indeed be a bit tougher. Your list already provided me with 4 new entries that I can hunt down. I also know XY-P Promo 297 Suzukisan contains Imakuni? and that’s where it gets tricky. When the name of the card doesn’t directly reference the Pokémon or character you’re researching. It might just take dumb luck to stumble upon more cards containing Imakuni?. Thanks again for your input!
This must have taken forever ha! The only thing I saw that I’m not sure exists is 1st edition Blaines charizard with the corrected fire energy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one
You’re right. I still need to remove it. Actually, I still need to update most of the lists, especially the oldest ones, since they contain more than one mistake and new cards have been released.
The non-Holos (or maybe the entire set, I’m not sure) from the Australian Red Logo packs have a semi-glossy back. It’s not as glossy as Japanese Glossy promos, but there is definitely a difference in comparison to regular US/European printed cards. Here an example picture of both a regular US/European and Australian Red Logo pack Pikachu. I’ve used an LED flashlight on the back, and on the US/European back it’s one big blur, but on the Australian back you can see the individual LEDs since it’s much more reflective.
You mean you’d like a list of all Dedenne cards? I don’t think I have any time this weekend, but might have some time next weekend, or perhaps an evening next week.
