Scratching my head as to why they would print a few holo Umbreon TMB cards when the English set doesn’t have any, especially the Umbreon.
It would be interesting to find out the original manufacturing costs behind making one off cards. You need custom plates and everything just for this singular card.
OP said there are two for each language in their post, idk.
From a quick search OP also has an account on here, maybe they can shed some light on it.
@Quuador is this new information on the mystery of flying pikachu?
The post says it was distributed to league tourney winners in Belgium
I don’t have anything to add about this French Umbreon. I had a discussion with OP in the species Discord about it yesterday, before they joined E4, but I’m as confused as you are and don’t have any more information besides what’s given in the French FB post.
(@tantris do you perhaps have a link to the FB post, even if it’s a private group? I’m curious what the comments say, and whether the OP has given any more information there.)
Only thing I can confirm is that the other three French cards they posted (Art Academy Kecleon; French Psyduck WotC promo; and French Flying Piachu promo) are all indeed pretty rare. ![]()
EDIT: @banks Oh nvm, I see you’re explicitly asking me about the Flying Pikachu. Completely misread your comment.
No, I already knew that one was pretty rare, but I’ve bought it for like 5 bucks a year after I started collecting, roughly ten years ago. And it’s not anywhere near as rare as the German or Spanish ones I’m still missing.
The information about Belgium winners might be new information, so thanks for the tag. ![]()
Greetz,
Quuador
It’s hard to be certain but the TMB symbol on the Umbreon looks different, almost like it’s four heads instead of two.
Sorry for tagging you here, but I think that only the owner of the card could shed some light on it and provide useful info to us on e4.

Here the same translated to English:
PS: I’m curious if the Karin’s Umbreon might be an elaborated, and posted one day too early, April Fool’s Day post.
Especially, since it wasn’t shared yet on his IG, unlike the other three cards.
Also, perhaps for comparison purposes, here are pictures of the French TMB deck that I once saved:
I’m pretty sure these cards ended up in the large Swiss collection, since they’re mentioned on their website:

That might be it.
This post is based on whether the the cards represent a thing someone actually owns and not just an edited image for April fools day, ie. let’s assume the person on facebook isn’t lying.
I think it’s absolutely reasonable to be skeptical of anything coming from Akabane. But simultaneously, he does have real stuff. It’s not really surprising that there would be extra cards from the TMB since cards are printed on sheets.
If you look at the prototype scam, it was both simple and excessive. The people involved photocopied pieces of paper and did an arts-and-crafts project. They also got greedy and produced a lot of copies.
The sophistication needed to fake something like this is another level. You’d need to create the digital files of the card with translations, produce printer plates and run it in on a massive offset printer. That’s not to say it can’t be done (especially since Akabane by nature has all the skills needed), but the level of effort needed is significantly higher. I just think it’s an odd pair of card to fake for money especially for just a few copies.
You can find old posts of me on here trying to explain why I thought the prototypes were real and I turned out to be mostly wrong. “Mostly” because it did it is the case that there were real copies in the end. Akabane has a ton of legit stuff. But now there will always be a cloud of suspicion over anything that comes from him.
I wouldn’t advise someone to buy it, but if we were making a zero stakes guess on authenticity, I would lean real based on what I know today. I don’t simply believe the story from Akabane about why they exist, because he’s discredited his words, and like the prototypes, the story is easy to fake.
But from a more ominous point of view, if Akabane or someone around him is faking cards at this level then it has implications for literally every Japanese vintage card because it means anything could be faked to a degree that you couldn’t tell.
totally agree with you , but i think nintendo must have a register where they have recorded all their activities.
I think it’s unlikely that every action a low-level employee did in 2001 was surveilled but even if it was true, TPC/Creatures/Media Factory/Nintendo is not going to release it or weigh in.
Just wondering. Is this the only photo of the card and we are debating if it is real?
If the OP is responsive couldn’t they just take a better photo?
As this photo stands it looks like that printed holofoil pattern on fake cards
@mthursty Beat me to it! If the owner could take better quality photos or a hi res scan that would help!
Large Swiss collection also posted them on instagram!
Just got confirmation that the Karin’s Umbreon was indeed an April Fool’s joke, after I got contacted by Andy who made the post, regarding a comment of my own French Flying Pikachu I left behind.
I’ve also heard some rumors that the release information and POP numbers in the post were also made up, so I’ve just asked Andy about that as well and am waiting for confirmation in either direction (made up as joke or not).
I must admit this was the only joke I fell for this year, since it sounded very believable and plausible, both the card and info.
He was surprised he fooled so many people.
Greetz,
Quuador
Hi guys!
As Quuador said, it’s indeed an April’s fool.
I’m used to troll the French community every year but I didn’t expect it to go beyond the borders (It’s TMB, what was I thinking?).
Facebook actually helped you by saturating the edited areas of the picture but somehow, no one caught it.
I mixed truths and lies to make it work but the French Umbreon do NOT exist. I’d love it though.
Regarding the other french cards, feel free to contact me, most of it is accurate.
Have a nice day ![]()
Andy
I knew this was a hoax because there was a “deez nuts” joke slipped in there. @crindy called it out too.
