I've found out one of my PSA slabs is a FAKE. Advice needed

Hi everyone, I’m Oldboy, new to the forum, but I’ve been in the hobby for about 5 years.

Anyway, after watching the Rattle video about fake PSA graded Carddass cards, I nervously checked my collection. Sadly, it turns out that I’m in possession of a fake (“made in Japan” text is missing). I bought it from PWCC on Ebay about a year ago. Is there anything I can do or is it just tough luck? Is it possible to claim against PSA as they “authenticated” the card? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

Reach out to PSA through the customer request center or by phone or email. They’ll likely want photos. Theoretically the psa financial guarantee would cover you for current market value or what you paid (whichever is lower likely).

I still need to watch that video of Rattles but I was on board with Rusty @thecharizardauthorty in a recent video. Weird that a counterfeit could get everything right but somehow omit that one bit of text. Then somehow he had a bunch from one collection where most were graded and others not. Almost sounds of a printing variant or “error” perhaps. Anyways who knows.

Hey dude,

First of all, big fan. I watch you quite regularly on Jake’s channel (I haven’t missed an episode since he started). Anyway, fangirling aside, they’re definitely fakes. I thought the same thing until I watched Rattle’s video. The fake cards came in these weird plastic sleeves that said “made in Japan” on but the legit cards came with paper bands around them.

Unfortunately, PSA just didn’t do their research. At one point they were grading the prism card versions that were never even available in prism/holo.

Anyway, I’ll try PSA. Even if they do refund me what I paid, I doubt they’ll cover the original shipping cost or import duties. I feel like a sucker :sob:

But they don’t get everything right. When looked at very closely at those cards missing the text, you can see that they use different card stock / surface finish, have out-of-focus image from poor reproduction and off-colors. A lot of classic tell tales signs of fake repros.

No ‘made in japan’

‘made in japan’

No ‘made in japan’

‘made in japan’

As for the OP, it is definitely worth reaching out to them and seeing if they do anything, in light of the fact that there is public record of them declaring counterfeit ‘no grade’ to a few people, Rusty included. This is new, as even as recent as a year ago they had no problem with them. That case and video should be referenced.

PSA Admitting to their mistakes (including the many they have graded) would mean an fair mass for recalls and paying out a lot of people. They are notorious for a lot of things; close to the top of their notoriety is the habit for denying their mistakes and denying the financial guarantee. It is an open and shut case, but in the world of PSA, that is tragically not the case.

Just reach out and say you have a known fake that they have acknowledged is a fake and provide everything and see if they are willing to buy it off you. That is all you can do. The extent to which you pursue conclusion is up to you and how much money you paid for that card.

What’s the market value range on these? I’ll have to check the video tomorrow I’m unfamiliar with these cards and it seems PSA was a bit unfamiliar too haha.

Thanks for the advice dude. If I get a response, I’ll update the thread.

Rattle told me :" Everyone with these issues can send to rghezzi@collectors.com who will be informing and directing to the appropriate person at PSA’s CRC.
Subject: Counterfeit Carddass Pokémon Card (Cert Number)
-Or “Multiple” if more than one cert.
Include all the purchase information in screenshots and anything additional that might be of importance.
They’ll have you send them in and should buy it back at todays fair market value."
