Is shining magikarp worth significantly more in Japan?

I haven’t followed it particularly closely, but I’m fairly sure I saw several Japanese shining magikarps get around $500+ on auction recently, that were NM, which is $100 on ebay.

And right now it looks like there is a graded version for sale on auction with a corocoro mew (PSA 8&9) and I think it is 70k yen.

Anyone know what is going on with this?

Are you talking about the Neo magikarp or fan club magikarp?

Ah yes, I almost fell for the same trap.

There is two Shining magikarps printed in Japan, the initial print was fan club only, which the shining magikarp has the classic golden body like the other shining cards. This card fetches a pretty penny because it’s a fan club only card and quite rare.

The second one was neo, which is a normal holo and does not command nearly as much as the fan club card.

For me, I can tell the difference through the picture of the holo.

Oh thanks, I totally forgot about the fan club, because I never looked I never noticed a large difference in the cards. Is the only notable difference the holo pattern?

The fan club magikarp has the embossed Holo, like shining raichu or charizard.

The Japanese neo magikarp has a Holo like Coro Coro mew.

The only other differentiator to my knowledge is the fan club karp doesn’t have the triple stars on bottom right, while neo karp does
