I’m not sure there’s a monitary level or qty that switches from speculation to investing if the time-frames are the same. I’d still consider someone who buys one stock or one fraction of a Bitcoin an investor in those things if they hold as long as someone with 100x their supply
(Could be wildly wrong here. All I know is pokemon. My parents think I’m a failure)
I have about 50 boxes, starting with some XY sets. I don´t buy cases. I don´t know where you got the idea from that I invest in Sword & Shield sets? While I do have these, they are not my focus.
And yes, I do think it is investing. Again, for my reasons, see earlier posts here. I don´t see a real counter argument in what you are saying to that.
As for nobody buying these boxes. That is just untrue. I have sold a lot of boxes for 1 to 3k. And then there is the ´Rip n Ship´ culture. The boxes are getting more scarce, therefore the price will go up and some people wanting these boxes (yes, they are there as long as Pokémon has a strong following) will want to pay that. That is economics.
Now, will this trend continue with the Sword & Shield boxes? I have not sold any yet so I cannot speak from my own experience (I´m not a flipper, they are still pretty new), but I very much doubt that it will be different.
Yeah I’m not really sure where how much of something quantifies if you’re a gambler vs an investor. IMO it’s all relative…if someone puts $10 a week into an ETF is that considered gambling because you’re not doing 100’s a week? Everyone has different income levels.
If you’re talking about overall liquidity levels from stocks vs cards, I guess I could see your point.
As others have stated, the big concern that I would have for sealed products is actually the logistics of selling them. Selling anything that the buyer can just report as resealed scares me to no end. PWCC/Fanatics was going to be my exit plan when the time came…but obviously that’s not in play anymore.
there is a reason auction houses and large cosigners wont take sealed product anymore (specifically booster boxes), actually HA might be one of the only ones that comes to might that still would
and psa has never introduced a grading product despite being in the biz for 25 years
Really sad though that that would be needed. I don´t really understand it either. I mean, someone buys your product. If it looks like in the pictures, than that should be that. As soon as someone had opened it it should not be eligable for refund.
Obviously resealing is very stupid, but you can tell if it has been. Just don´t buy anything without very clear pictures. If doubt, don´t buy.
Yeah, I guess you´re right. It´s just very sad to me since the only use for it comes from scammers. With cards there is an actual benefit other than avoiding a scam.
As someone who is looking to sell a wotc box from my personal collection, what safe avenues are there left to sell? Facebook seems hit or miss, instagram makes me feel like I’m YOLOing it. All this talk about scams that abound in eBay make me hesitate to do that. Are card shows the only safe way to go now?
Goldin, Heritage, and RareCandy would be safe options. Some of the large consigners on eBay may take sealed product (e.g., TCAGaming, Z&G, KetchumAllCollectibles, Probstein123).
I asked a question on this topic of Pratte recently, and we’ll see what his answer is, but your is more general. Some sealed HAS dropped and like all things, it depends when you buy. Buying at launch is probably a solid strategy, but who knows…
Like others, I wonder about how to minimize risk while selling. I have a decent sealed stock (I consider it stock not collection as I wholy intend to sell eventually). BUT Sealed has provided my largest ROI on average, so it’s a solid idea. Ironically, my biggest sealed ROI has been emerging powers, although, it wouldn’t be, if I was comfy or in need of selling more of the other stuff.
In the first two years sealed may drop, because of reprints, hype falling ect. But do you have an example of a sealed boosterbox dropping after two years, without reprints?
I´m not talking about dropping a dollar or 5 for half a year. Real drops, like we see in cards.
Just look at WOTC boxes from the peak of 2020 hype to now. Most of those have gone down quite significantly, although there are some which are starting to increase again.
Yeah, allright. Agreed. I guess that is not really a problem for me because I can´t afford boxes of 10K and over haha. Boxes going from 30K to 15K does indeed happen.
