Ilovelabs' humble collection

Hello everyone!

Thank you for checking out my collection (and first post)! I prefer to collect VERY slowly, focusing on the few cards that are meaningful to me in some way. As such, I don’t have a large collection, but it is well loved (almost as much as my lab)!

In any event, I’ll include a few captions for reasons why I’ve collected specific cards, but spoiler tag them for those that’d rather simply peruse the card images (which is completely valid).

This is my front page. Suicune gold star is my favorite card in my collection. Despite being much cheaper in the past, it was always an unobtainable grail for me despite always yearning to own it. When I finally acquired this copy from the first card show I ever attended in 2021, I was simply ecstatic.

As for the Hoenn starters, well they are simply the best. Any contradictions to that objective truth will be viewed as wildly fallacious anti-Hoenn propaganda!

This page features my four favorite ex cards. This specific copy of Ninetales ex is one of two cards from my childhood that has survived multiple moves and an extended hiatus from collecting (typical teenage distancing from my ‘childish’ interests). Ninetales was the first ex card I ever pulled from a pack, an event that I had limited opportunities to partake in. Thankfully, I’m fortunate that my mom has always been very supportive of my nerdy interests, and knowing how sentimental the ninetales ex was to me, she absconded it (for safeguarding until I was older) when I gave away most my collection as a teenager.

Arcanine, Suicune, and Milotic are all Pokémon I love, though none of these specific cards have the story attached to them as ninetales does.

I’m a Hoenn hoe, so alongside the starters, owning my favorite ex cards of some of Hoenn’s most iconic legendries was a must!

Two (quick) stories here: Ex delta species released on my 7th birthday, which as a kid I thought was really neat to share a birthday with a Pokémon set. As a present, my mom allowed me to pick out a pack of cards at Walmart. Excitedly, I searched for the brand new set, but to no avail. However, they did have some TRR packs in stock. I pulled the Dark Houndoom holo (not this specific copy), and have cherished the card since.

Milotic from Hidden legends was the first card I remember pulling from my first pack ever, so it is both beloved and nostalgic. So much so, I drew the proceeding (rather poor) illustration of it as a kid for my 3-ring binder cover (which amazingly survived to today)!

More artworks that I simply adore : )

The next section of my binder is what I consider to be the magnum opus of my collection: All of the HGSS legend cards and the CoL SL cards (as well as the honorary ‘Arcanine and Ninetales legend’).

It took me approximately four years to acquire them, and I couldn’t be happier to showcase them in this post!

HGSS as an era is very sentimental to me because it is when I returned to collecting briefly following a hiatus during the DPP era, and before taking a longer hiatus from BW to late SM. Furthermore, (and more influentially with respect to personal sentimentality) I was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, and so HGSS was an essential distraction that was invaluable for helping me get through that period of my life.

Last but not least, is my modern section. While there are many pulchritudinous IR cards, I relatively recently sold what I had to focus on my favorite SIRs, as the lower quantity of the latter feels less overwhelming to collect (yet still admire)! This includes the gen 3 SIR pokemon (excluding the SV base Gardevoir, as I prefer to not include multiple copies of mechanically identical cards); Ho-oh for my HGSS fanfare; Zacian for my canid fanfare; and the gold pikachu, since I pulled it and wanted at least one pikachu card in my collection.

Thanks again for taking the time to peruse my collection! I feel privileged to post my humble collection amongst a breadth of stunning curations that are E4. I look forward to updating this post once I complete the next page(s).
Have a wonderful day (and fellow hoenn hoes, you can have a wonderful week ; )

Wow! I love your collection!!

That ninetales ex is a beauty, I’m glad you could save that from ur childhood collection. I’m thinking of branching out my collection to different pokemon since the only collection I have right now is my absol collection

This was a fun read!

Thank you very much!
Absol is absolutely awesome (I’ll spare you puns, as I’m sure you heard many)! Spreading out can be a lot of fun, though I implore that you establish very clearly the extent that you want to spread out before doing so to keep it fun rather than have it become taxing. What mon(s) do you think you want to collect in addition to absol?

Such an amazing collection thread. It really is a snapshot though your collection years. I love it and love your enthusiasm and care that you have for your collection. It really shines through the way you write about it.

I am also a fan of the HGSS era and your binders are lovely. Especially the break cards are so nice to see. Thanks a lot for sharing your collection. It was a lovely read and also a great showcase. Looking forward to the updates whenever you post them.

Thank you for this new word! I really had to Google what it meant.

Cheers!

I’ve been thinking of completing a Gen 1 pokedex with cards I like of each pokemon. I’m just scared that if I start doing that I’ll be obligated to complete the rest of the gens since I’m a bit of a perfectionist.

I do have a few illustration rares of other mons I have lying around but I have them just because I like how the artstyle looks.

Thank you kindly, and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I also appreciate you as both a fellow HGSS enjoyer and word nerd : )

That’s certainly a solid goal foundation, and I can understand your concerns. While ultimately, you should collect what you enjoy, I might suggest picking an era (or two if need be) and sticking to it for completing your gen 1 Pokédex. This way, you can see if you enjoy the process, whilst simultaneously limiting the scope of other generations that are possible to collect to curb the perfectionist itch. Regardless, I look forward to seeing your collection and I hope this tip is helpful to you!

Beautiful collection. It is easy to see that your collection is carefully curated and each card is handpicked. love it!

Great collection, and thank you for sharing the story behind each segment :slightly_smiling_face: The EX era is really full of beautiful cards, and Milotic’s illustrations have such regality to them. Absolutely enjoy the Milotic illustration you kept from childhood too!

Look forward to more additions in the future!

Perhaps small and humble, but certainly something to be proud of. You chose some great cards, and it’s a very nice collection. In some ways, the smaller amount and choice bangers really make them stand out! I envy that there are just a few cards per page as well. It’s not overwhelming, as I sometimes am with mine…
Great collection! :star_struck:

Thank you for your comment and for looking!

Hello E4,

It has been a busy time since I first posted my collection, and I made some changes that I thought would be fun to share :slightly_smiling_face:

As before, I’ll spolier any descriptions so those that simply want to view the cards can (no shame in that)! I also thought it’d be interesting to leave my initial post up to offer a comparison to the collection changes I’ve made (or to help remind myself what I changed, who’s to say which is the primary motive, and which is ulterior). Anyways, I hope you enjoy looking, and thanks for taking the time to do so!

Binder Upgrade! I ordered this from Etsy, and I couldn’t be happier with the result! The laser engraving is very well done. Also, Blaziken made a return appearance to contribute to that sweet, sweet presentation :slightly_smiling_face:

The Hoenn starters still reign supreme, and Pikachu is too iconic to be absent from my collection. I suppose it is best to keep it simple, stupid!

I had a lot of fun making this page! One of the changes I’ve made is to focus on ex-era holos from what is the adv era in JPN (Ruby and Sapphire base - Hidden Legends in Global). I love this depiction of Torkoal, where he appears to be exuding confidence, knowing he’s about to unleash a drought-boosted Eruption in Trick Room!

Of course, I do love all my cards equally…(ok, this page is my favorite, though it is actually close. This is our secret, though, you’ve obligately agreed to by unspoilering this text, bwahaha)

While I did thoroughly enjoy collecting all the legends and CoL SL cards, I ultimately decided that, between the boom and the cards not doing as much for me as they used to, I would sell them to reinvest in my collection and life goals. However, I am too partial to these two to sell them, so they have remained as a memento of what I once had.

I do still relish the idea of having representative legends for gens 3-4, so here is my gen 3/Hoenn page. I realize Gardevoir and Milotic aren’t legends, but aesthetically they work well, and I just think they’re neat :slightly_smiling_face:

You’re welcome, Sinnon fans (I thought you would have learned after Undella town, but you are all tenacious, I’ll give you that). :winking_face_with_tongue:

Atsushi Furasawa has quickly become one of my favorite modern illustrators. I’m amazed at how well he captures ephemeral moments of tranquility, poise, and dynamism.

I thought I would include this page too this time (I had it before, but excluded it because it wasn’t Pokémon). The bottom cards (what I’m actually collecting) are from a dead card game called Chaotic (it was around North America between 2007 and 2009). If you’re curious, here’s some more info (I promise no jump scares this time: Chaotic Trading Card Game - Wikipedia ). The top row is just a placeholder for some other Chaotic cards I’d like to get. They are from a board game (living card game, technically) called Smash Up that I used to play, but no longer do.

Thanks for looking at my collection, and I hoped you enjoyed it (and maybe even laughed once or twice, too)! :slightly_smiling_face:
