Hurricane Matthew and protecting my collection LOL!

Hi guys!

As some of you guys might know we start getting hit with the storm here in Florida in a day or two. Thankfully we are prepared here in Orlando and we should not be getting hit as hard. I apologize in advance if I am repeating a topic on a previous thread but I couldn’t help but wonder of a good way of protecting our collection (especially from water damage). I have previously read articles and comments about Safes that can affect the cards due to air or the chemical that they have for moisture. Is this true? Can anyone verify this? Also, if you do have safe, do you mind sharing your opinion?

I think is funny that my boyfriend got home today asking if I had gone to the supermarket and said “No, but I already protected my Pokemon collection” LOL…priorities :sunglasses: !

Here is a pic of my collection. Everything should fit in a safe

Not all safes are created equal, if its a cheap safe they are generally not water proof. Often times people will use a dehumifier or a heating element to keep the safe warmer than the outside to prevent moisture that they make just for safes.

How did I not think of the Ziplock bags? haha that is great idea. It is now that I like displaying my collection on my desk and I’m starting to realize I need to have a safe plan  Thanks for the tip!! Will post an update tomorrow morning  Anyone recommend any Safe for storing? Might have to buy one in the next months!

Hahaha! Love your avatar by the way!

Water tight boxes generally do the trick.

This is what I use.

It’s not much of a safe BUT it is very protective (And waterproof). It is also supposedly fire proof too xD JUST Incase

Pelican 1600 CaseThe foam is Pick N’Pluck foam so you can make your own dimensions so no cards are moving around

(Edit) They come in different colors, I chose orange because charizard.

Ziplock bags and large tupperwares in a plasic storage container. I got a few of the kind with the lid that has quick release handles and it makes for really easy and simple access. I think I got them at target.

I’m in Miami and all we have right now is a cool ocean breeze

Stay safe!

If you’re looking for protection in the event of a flood, I recommend two things:

  1. Make completely certain that your protective measures include water PROOFING not water RESISTANCE. All waterproof cases are going to have a seal at the minimum and may also have some pressure valve component as well. If you get something that is only waterproof you will not have any guarantees about the condition of the condition in the event the case becomes submerged.

  2. Thoroughly anchor your case. No joke, throw a rope around that sucker, toss in a couple boy scout approved knots, and anchor it to your leg if you have to. No matter how safe your product is inside the case of choice, if the case floats away you’re going to be an unhappy camper.

I absolutely love this thread. Was wondering if anyone in Florida was concerned about their collection. Good luck and keep safe!

Be safe man! We should start feeling it tonight.

Awesome info and advice! You know I’ve been wondering (and I don’t want to sound dark) How many treasures/ collectibles have been lost during storms and disasters. The other day I thought of the 2011 Japan Tsunami and I wondered… how many of those rare cards that are unaccounted for were maybe lost during the flooding??

Many are and the fact is anything can be replaced but not your life. We worked so hard on our collection that it became our life but I rather loose it all.

I mean I have them on my insurance just in case someone breaks in and steals them all or a fire happens or anything in that matter.

You can’t expect them to be safe all the time.

Hey guys! Thanks @killerred09, So far we are good in Orlando, FL . I can hear the winds but we still have power. Hope @jkanly is good too. He said a day or two ago he’s in Miami and I know they are getting hit too.

Did you survive?

Thanks @killerred09 @jjnoriega All good here in Miami. We had a light rain and some wind earlier last night but not much else, surprisingly. Not even a downed branch. :astonished: Glad to hear you all in orlando are ok! I think Daytona is getting hit the worst right now.
