How to Grade Pokemon Cards at PSA with GameStop - My Grading Experience

My PSA Collector’s Club subscription expired so I decided to try out grading through GameStop because the math of renewing my subscription wasn’t adding up for me.

I did a little research into the process beforehand but was greeted with conflicting information and 30min long Youtube videos so I figured I’d summarize my experience, give some tips and relay some information I was told from the associate (Which may or may not be true).

Create a free GameStop account online beforehand. The associate told me that you can submit without an account, but without one you are unable to track your submission as it goes through the grading process.

No research/ID is done in store for the submission. You simply tell them how many cards you are submitting and they print off labels for each card and a master label for your entire submission. The cards are then sorted into batches of 8 and the associate takes pictures of the front of the cards, then takes pictures of the back of the cards with the label applied.

I didn’t ask for this but the associate encouraged me to take as many pictures or videos as I wanted during the process. According to her, that depends on the specific location and varies store to store. This was a relief because the whole “no research/ID” situation was giving me some anxiety.

Rubberband Training Once the cards were batched up I was told that the official GameStop training was to split them into batches of 4 and rubber band them together. She explained to me that GameStop did research and with 4 cards the rubber band wouldn’t bend them. Before I could say anything she told me that she would leave the choice of the rubber band up to me (but that varies by location).

Submission Sorting The entire submission is then placed in a tamper resistant bag, the master label is applied and the submission is locked up until shipment.

Local Tax(es) I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t applied :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:.

Upcharges Upcharges follow the standard PSA schedule and are paid in store at the time you pick up your order.

Tracking You can access the submission tracker in the “order details” of your account. One thing to note is that you do not get a tracking number for the shipment to PSA. Since multiple orders are combined and shipped in a single package it appears that the tracker will not update to “arrived” until PSA processes the package and scans your individual submission. This is concerning because once the package is shipped, there is no way of knowing if it’s waiting to be processed at PSA or lost in the mail.

Return You will receive an email notifying you that your cards have been graded and how many up charges were applied. At this point all of your grades and upcharges will be detailed in your Gamestop account if you would like to look at them.

Gamestop will call you when your order is ready for pickup. Your return will not be individually packaged and sealed. PSA ships all submissions from your local store in one box and relies on Gamestop employees to sort through/parse out orders. This was surprising. An employee could very easily pocket high value cards and just walk out of the store at the end of their shift.

Upon receipt all upcharges are due and you must sign a form that states all of your cards were returned to you with no damage. Unless you’re a big gambler, this forces you to go through the entire submission in store and see all of your grades in front of strangers.

My Summary/Opinion Submitting through Gamestop is easier and cheaper than submitting yourself. The process is designed to lower the barrier to entry for new customers. In my opinion it all comes down to your risk appetite. With a few changes to the process and implementation of additional controls I think it could be a game changer. As of 3/17/25 I will go back to submitting myself.

Thanks for sharing this! A large number of consumers are using GameStop to grade at PSA. It’s nice to see the process and your experience here.

I don’t know if that’s true but it’s free and you have to give them your information either way so might as well.

No research/ID is done in store for the submission .

I am not understanding this. My pea-brain mind needs further clarification.

I am old enough to know not to ever trust gamestop for anything. They have burned the bridge and then vaporized the charred timber for good measure. I just cannot imagine leaving my stuff in a gamestop for a week.

I’m glad you found this experience to be smooth. And I appreciate you sharing the actual process.

Understood. Time will tell.

im sure you will be fine! But I forsee criminal scum doing criminal scum things. Thefts are on the rise, scamming is on the rise, all manner of skullduggery.

Hi all, I was planning on updating this with all the information once I was completed with the entire process but some new details emerged today that I think would be relevant to someone considering grading through GameStop and I figured it would be best to share in real time.

Once your order is shipped you are not provided with a tracking number. My order shipped from GameStop about three weeks ago and still has not updated to “arrived” in the “PSA Received” section of the tracker.

I’m assuming this is because multiple orders are shipped at once and it will not update to “arrived” until PSA opens the package and scans in my order. I called the store to confirm if that’s the case and they didn’t know. They also were unable to access the tracking information for the package. I was told to “give it another 2 weeks and if it doesn’t update check back”. It was pretty obvious they were just throwing a number out there.

I’m still under the assumption that the package is waiting to be processed at PSA but without a tracking number there’s no way to know if that’s the case or if the package is lost. As we all know PSA can take forever so sitting in limbo for a month or two isn’t ideal and feels like a big flaw in the process to me.

Hey I’m also in the process of grading with gamestop! From what I’ve heard the psa submission tracking is pretty poor (lol) so it’s very possible that your cards are further along in the grading process and you won’t be updated as it’s happening.

Mine is currently sitting on “Shipped to PSA” as well

Thanks for the heads up! I figured that was probably the case but knowing your order is in the same situation gives me some comfort.

Did you receive an email when it shipped? I got the following email when I submitted and it’s been radio silence ever since lol. Your local Gamestop has a much cooler name than mine btw

I got the same email! Unfortunately I’m in the same boat and haven’t received anything since that initial email.

My local gamestop definitely takes care of me :sunglasses:

I would steer clear of GameStop for grading, and here is why:

GameStop lost my cards : r/PokeInvesting

Gamestop’s Stealing Cards : r/PokemonTCG

Do not grade card at GameStop : r/PokemonTCG

Not to mention there have been instances where Gamestop is SELLING fake PSA slabs ( @RattlePokemon has done multiple videos on the topic )

You are leaving sometimes thousands of dollars of cards in a retail employee’s hands. They aren’t a local card store with passionate employees and a connection to the community. You can get lucky and find an employee who’s into TGC and get good service, but if something happens to the cards anywhere along the way, the support/resolution process is abysmal. Like you have to @ the CEO on twitter just to get it noticed. And why should anyone have to contact company CEO’s just to get the bare minimum level of customer service?

Not saying everyone will have issues, but if you DO have issues, the employees can do literally nothing about it, calling customer service is futile, and you can be waiting for months to have anything happen.

Final update. Hope this helps!
