Since seeing the cards on here talked about and pictured a couple times recently, I have become very interested in them! I would love to own at least one one day and I’d super love to own all 4 one day!
I was wondering how many are known to be in collectors hands? I know it’s widely believed (but not 100% confirmed) that only 30 of each exist. There’s a few on eBay and I know Quuador has a couple. Those are all i have seen. Im just wondering if there is a (somewhat, approximate, rough) tally on how many have been found. I know it’s a looooooooooooong shot but if there is some still in the wild, I’d be tickled to know I have a shot at scoring one in a binder somewhere. What a thrill that would be!
Also, is there a article/guide on these four cards? If there is I would love to read it. Is it known who first brought it to light and how it was discovered?
Lastly, TCA Gaming just did a YouTube video and in it he had a mewtwo with no stamp! The first I’d seen of any of these 4 that lacked the stamp. Does anyone know if this was the first one of the “no stamp” error to pop up? Anyone with anything at all on this card, rusty if you have any background on it, I’d be thrilled to hear about it!
This forum holds the majority of trophy cards, 1st edition PSA 10 Charizards, and other rare pokemon items. I’m not sure 6 out of 30 a compelling number to start to claim the number might be off.
Considering the distribution method of these cards, it would be a miracle if 6 out of 30 sets even survived, there’s a couple listed on ebay as well, not to mention the cards sitting in personal collections that aren’t publicly known, plus the story about WotC knowing that only one sheet got out before they caught the error, doesn’t add up logically lol
I can assure you no wotc employee has any clue about the number of these that exist. Plus, 20 years ago they were all over the place. I personally saw dozens of them just at the Frank & Sons shows on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s in 1999. I bought a bunch, and multiples more I left behind because of price or condition.
Not even I would venture a guess as to their total population.
I can tell you this though. More people want them than what are available. The prices I’ve seen this last couple years have seemed appropriate. Mainly cause a big hoard doesn’t figure to pop up.
I agree, these are still scarce and very collectable, the prices they command are reflective of this and deserving. Just have a problem with taking certain things ex WotC employees say as gospel when there is reasonable doubt about the validity of the claims
I’m not sure who’s saying it’s gospel, it’s simply the best number we’ve got. I don’t think it’s too absurd to think half the cards survived. Most of the ones I’ve found have been in pretty standard condition. Either way we’re comparing one piece of anecdotal evidence to another. How do we determine which is right? Im just as skeptical of the 30 claim as others can be but the evidence against it is weak.
I found someone selling a small hoard of them as well. The reason - they all came from the same theater. Aka, their distribution method put a lot of them in the same place. Gary saying dozens, let’s say that’s around 30-40. If the total pop is around 120, a huge number being in one location still isn’t that shocking.
Finding a few on eBay about the same number as tropical wind or other such cards. The appearance is pretty similar, these cards have less desirability so they stay listed longer. Either way this is all anecdotal too, but if you change perspective you can make either side work in either direction. Until we have a better number to go by, or the number is 90% accounted for I’d rather have something to point to vs nothing.
I’m enjoying hearing everyone’s input and learning what knowledge does exist on this! Thanks everyone who has put what they know and think here. It’s interesting to take all this into account. I’m still holding onto the sliver of a chance I can find one in some dudes childhood binder I buy for 150 bucks!
