How long after release do you buy modern singles?

I just bought all the AR and SAR cards from team rocket because the prices seemed reasonable but I’m curious what you think. I usually hear people say anything from one month after realease to half a year. There might be a difference between languages aswell since japanse cards get re-printed less compared to english.

Normal times, normal set = 2-3 months after release. Most amount of singles that people are trying to dump.
Speciality set = wait until last product is released. Example, Prismatic Evolutions is best in September 2025.
Crazy times = who knows, sometimes release day is best, sometimes 3 years later is better

I’ve learned never to set a hard-and-fast rule on when to buy, so I buy when I am comfortable with the prices. Sometimes that’s release day, sometimes that’s six months after, sometimes that’s never.

In the past, waiting several months was best because the new set hype died down and more supply was opened, depressing prices. It was almost a certainty that buying later would mean lower prices. However, now day 1 markets are often not optimized and prices can be the lowest then (see Tera Festival Eeveelutions). Hype can also take off post-release (Surging Sparks). It’s now an objective fact that waiting doesn’t always result in lower prices, and may in fact result in significantly higher prices.

Most often I do wait a bit, if for no other reason than to see the market stabilize. But going by feel and how much you’re comfortable paying has served me much better over the last several years than setting a date and sticking to it.

It used to be 6-9months after release would be the low. Now its whenever you see a price that sounds reasonable to you.

Depends on the card and the price, traditionally I just go off vibe and if I think the card is worth it / undervalued or not

Another comparison is Umbreon XMAX alt art was under $200 shortly after Evolving Skies release. Obviously that card took off in the $1,000-$2,000 range.
So when Prismatic Evolutions released, the market decided to already price Umbreon ex SAR to the $1,000-$1,500 range. Some could say the long term increase is already baked in, so no room to grow. Just another thought to add.

Gonna echo a lot of what people have said already. Sometimes it can be months after with died down hype/more supply like a lot of SV stuff now and sometimes it can be closer to release like cards from Surging Sparks being pretty low prices before spiking up.

Main takeaway for today is buy at whatever price you’re comfortable with.
